Tirion, Baarn, 2001. 223p. ills. Paperback. Callenbach, Baarn, 1996. 255p. Paperback. Lower corner front cover slightly creased. Signature on half title. Original title: 'Eyewitness to Jesus. Amazing New Manuscript Evidence About the Origin of the Gospel'.?Journalism and scholarship are seldom happy bedfellows. The book by Thiede and d?Ancona is a case in point. It is an attempt to reestablish the text of the Magdalen papyrus of Matthew (p.64), to argue for its having been written in the first century, and to assess the implications of that dating for the origins of the Synoptic Gospels. All these investigations and deductions seem proper academic exercises, however unlikely the conclusions may be. But the whole debate has been hijacked by an inappropriate journalistic approach. (?) The sub-title of this book is: ?The most sensational evidence on the origins of the Gospels since the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls.? This is a two-edged sword and is inadvertently critical. Whatever else the Scrolls may reveal, it is universally recognized that they tell us absolutely nothing about the origins of the NT Gospels!? (J.K. ELLIOTT on the English original edition in Novum Testamentum, 1996, p.393).…
