Those who experienced it in action had tales to tell… and images to share that are scarcely credible as we see it now - quiescent and apparently inert, picking up the long rays of winter sunlight or the pulses of rain or mist, shifting and shading its shape and tones over the days and seasons. Behind it, mute and neutral, sits Monte Somma, dormant for 16,000 years. Paralysing horror colours Pliny the Younger's measured telling, in his two letters to Tacitus thirty years later, of his uncle's experience and subsequent death in 79 CE. That eruption was combined with a rare pyroclastic flow working like a flame-thrower of deadly gas. Equally chilling is film footage shot by American troops near Naples in March 1944 as the lava progresses, implacably, down a village street. The terrible account from antiquity, the scarcely credible moving images on YouTube are equally essential reminders of the brutal forces harboured within Vesuviu.
