Etat : VG. 1st ed. f/piece+xiii+387; half-title inscr.: 'For Mr Bettison/ Nov. 5 1909/ with complements from Miss Jane Coode (A Member of the St. Austell Board of Guardians', otherwise internally clean, tight and unmarked with good gutters, some brown flecking to fore-edge of textblock, gilt-lettered dark blue covers clean & bright with only minimal rubbing to extremities. A curious mixture of subject matter combining public health, workhouses, Boards of Guardians and eels in the Metropolitan water mains with continental travels around vineyards, mountaineering and the 'Ammergau Passion Play'. 'Fenian outrages' are also indexed. The author's career seems to have spanned the latter quarter of the 19th century down to about 1908. Dates are a bit scanty but he appears to have been born around 1841 since he says he was thinking of retiring at 65 years in 1906 but took a 2 year extension. A nice copy of this curious and informative work. …
