He became the first President of independent Zambia in 1964, the year this book was published. The work includes excerpts from his autobiography, first published as Zambia Shall Be Free, as well as major addresses of the early 1960s. This copy was inscribed in 1964 to J. Wayne Fredericks, the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, from 1961-67, by the editor Thomas Melady: "To Wayne who did very much to bring the Zambian people to the dignity of a free state." [62113]. Signed.
