Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book offers a critical examination of the social and legal systems of England in the early 19th century, focusing on the state of the poor and the causes of crime. The author argues that crime is not a consequence of individual moral failings, but rather a product of systemic injustices and a lack of opportunity. He challenges prevailing theories that attribute crime to poverty alone, instead emphasizing the importance of education, employment, and a just legal system in shaping moral character. Drawing inspiration from historical figures like Beccaria and Bentham, the author delves into the complexities of prison discipline, arguing that harsh punishments are not effective deterrents to crime. He further critiques the existing educational system, which he believes fails to instill moral values and intellectual curiosity in the poor, ultimately contributing to their social exclusion and vulnerability to crime. The author calls for a radical shift in social policy, advocating for a more compassionate and just approach to the poor, including land reform and an improved system of education. The book's insights into the social and legal issues of its time resonate with contemporary discussions about poverty, crime, and social justice, offering a powerful historical lens through which to understand the enduring challenges of inequality and the importance of social reform in building a more just society. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. [Wontner, Thomas]. Old Bailey Experience. Criminal Jurisprudence and the Actual Working of our Penal Code of Laws. Also, An Essay on Prison Discipline, to Which is Added a History of the Crimes Committed by Offenders in the Present Day. By the Author of "The Schoolmaster's Experience in Newgate." London, J. Fraser, 1833. xi, 447 pp. Pebbled cloth, gilt title to spine, rebacked retaining existing backstrip, endpapers renewed, light foxing and soiling in several places. $175. * Only edition. Wontner, the son of John Wontner, governor of Newgate Prison, ascribes crime among the poor to "the errors of government, and the want of a controlling moral power in the country" (13). He argues that Britain's highly strict penal code, "sanguinary and uncertain," does not effectively deter crime. Instead, the poor must be educated and the rich must commit to meeting their needs with charity. …
