Die Hierarchie der Erkenntnisformen, wie Nietzsche sie verstand, gipfelte in der Kunst. Mit dieser Positionierung der Kunst hat Nietzsche aber - wie sich exemplarisch am Beispiel Bohrers zeigen lässt - Kritiken provoziert, die seine Philosophie als "die erste theoretisch fundierte Fassung" des Ästhetismus kennzeichnen und ihn für die in der Debatte über das Ästhetische bemängelte Entgrenzung des Ästhetischen verantwortlich machen. Infolge dieser Tendenz, wie sie vor allem durch Konzepte verbreitet werde, die der sogenannten Postmoderne zuzuordnen sind, werde das Ästhetische der ihm eigenen, subversiven Kraft beraubt.
