Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : No Dust Jacket Issued. In 1666 Prince Rupert and George Monk, Duke of Albemarle were appointed by Charles II to a joint command of the fleet that had been engaged in the Second Dutch War. The war was largely a naval one spanning five years with neither securing victory. Rupert and Monck shared few characteristics and rather than causing conflict the appointment drew the best of each. The letters provide a clear view of how the two men worked together for the best of the country and they allowed further development in strength and tactics of the nascent Royal Navy, including the line of battle tactic used for over two centuries. Includes 1*map and 8*b/w illustrations. x, 308pp. Blue buckram covered boards with the Society's emblem in gilt to upper board and gilt lettering to spine. Very slight spotting to boards.
