Half title in first volume, OCLC 52438603. Spine tips have a bit of wear but bindings generally handsome, interior normal library marks including pockets. Renewed endpapers and both free front endpapers are cracking at gutter. Vol. I half title has old tape repair, title page has some short tears, and chipping at edges, page 83 has some old repairs to the page not affecting text, some foxing throughout but otherwise clean. Vol. II is missing half title, free endpapers are cracking at gutter, title page has old stain in the margin along with library marks, last page of index has corner chipped off. A bit fragile but still whole, bindings presentable if utilitarian, still quite usable. This is the 2nd edition which was prepared by Daniel Twining. Thomas Twining was an English classics scholar, grandson of the tea merchant, His reputation as a scholar was made with this translation of Artistotle's Poetics. ; Ex-Library; 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall.

This is a near fine hardcover two volume second edition copy bound in contemporary 3/4 brown leather, 5 rib spines with gold stamping, marbled boards and marbled endpapers and marbled edges. This is the large marbling as done in 1812. A lovely set with unfoxed paper. Photos on request. This was done by the Twinings, whose tea I consume every morning. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Second edition. Thomas Twining had produced the first useable English translation of Aristotle's Poetics in 1789. This is the second edition of 1812, edited by his nephew. This 2-volume set has an attractive armorial bookplate bearing the name "Hoar" on the front pastedown of each volume. According to a pencilled notation on the rear pastedown of volume I, the set was owned by George Frisbie Hoar, Abolitionist, Radical Republican, and Massachusetts senator from 1877-1904. A handsome set in its original cloth bindings. Fitted with custom Mylar protective covers. Dark brown blind embossed ribbed cloth over boards, with gilt-stamped spine titles, yellow endpapers. Handsome bookplate on each front pastedown (see further description below). Some shallow chipping at spine ends and in a couple of places along joints. Splitting of cloth at top 1 1/2" of both joints on volume II, though boards and hinges remain firmly attached. Interiors bright and clean. A near fine set overall. Original cloth over boards.
