Contains many politically incorrect images, stories, such as Golliwogs, a poem entitled "Seven Little Sambos". Full colour frontis. Coverboards have wear, mainly around edges, and are slightly bowed. Some light staining on rear board. Pages are yellowed and a few have some small tears/chips. A couple of illustrations have been neatly coloured in. An interesting feature of this copy of the book is that a previous owner has pasted three small silk flags on the rear pastedown endpaper. The flags are the British Empire Trinity House Masters Flag, British Empire State of Perlis State Flag, and British Empire White Ensign with the header "Kensitas Cigarettes". The flags were promotional give-aways included in packages of Kensitas cigarettes in 1934. Brings to mind images of a young child puffing away on a cigarette while reading the Wilfred's Annual! Still, starting at rear hinge. That all identified, remains internally clean and bright with bright colour plates and black and white illustrations. The characters Pip, Squeak and Wilfred were created by Bertram Lamb, a journalist on the Daily Mirror, who was born in Islington, London, on 14 May 1887 and died in Switzerland in 1938. He never drew the cartoons, but thought up the idea of the characters which were drawn by Austin Bowen Payne. Colour Prize Plate to the front free end paper, light rubbing to the corners, spotting to the end papers, else in Very Good smart condition, the rear blue line illustration on white paper to the rear is very clean and fresh. Die-cut pictorial card covers in the shape of Wilfred the Rabbit with moveable head, a little minor rubbing/chipping to edges/spine, minor scuffing/soiling, a few small pencil marks. Contents fair with minor soiling & rust marks. Staples have rusted away and the pages have been neatly stuck in place. Head pivots and can be moved. 2-tone illustrations by Austin Bowen Payne throughout. Based on the British cartoon strip ''Pip, Squeak & Wilfred'' that appeared in the Daily Mail newspaper between 1919 and 1956. It was created by Bertram Lamb, also known as Uncle Dick and featured the adventures of three friends - a dog called Pip, a Penguin called Squeak and a rabbit called Wilfred. The cartoon was very popular and spawned annuals, toys and china, along with some animated films. This book is from a series of 4 die-cut books, all with moving heads. Two were similar to this one featuring the lives of Pip and Squeak respectively, while the other was called ''The Adventures of Pip & Squeak'' and featured a cover showing all three animals riding in a tub. Wilfred's life story tells how he was found in a turnip field and adopted by Pip and Squeak. Very Scarce.
