Soft cover. Very good. Minor wear on old fold lines. Minor infill at a couple of fold intersections. Pinholes in some corners. Minor soiling upper left corner. Size 21.25 x 38.5 Inches. A rare and charming 1935 Frank Robert Harper pictorial map of the Upper Peninsula, Michigan. Coverage embraces the entire upper peninsula with adjacent parts of Wisconsin, Lower Peninsula Michigan, and Canada. Drawn in the style of pictorial mapmaker Ruth Taylor White, the map is rich with decorative vignettes illustrating the sporting and outdoor life available in the Upper Peninsula. The map was issued for the Upper Peninsula Development Bureau to promote tourism. Publication History and Census This map was copyrighted and issued in 1935 by the Upper Peninsula Development Bureau, under George E. Bishop. This map was issued and published separately, but examples printed by Ann Arbor Press do occasionally appear folded into a 1936 promotional brochure entitled Lure of the Land of Hiawatha . That multi-page brochure features a mini-atlas of UP Counties, in an identical pictorial style attributed to 'Frank R. Harper, Staff Artist'. We believe this map to be by the same figure. The map is rare to the market. The OCLC notes five institutional holdings spread between multiple entries. References: Rumsey 11130.000. OCLC 12890483, 6348497.
