La maggior parte di queste poesie latine di natura encomiastica è ascrivibile al 1478, un anno decisivo sia per la vita di Codro, incerto se andarsene dalla Forlì di Pino III Ordelaffi per stabilirsi in cerca di protezione presso altri signori delle città emiliano-romagnole, sia, com'è noto, nella storia delle signorie italiane, segnato dalla Congiura dei pazzi e dalle guerre che scaturirono da essa. Altre poesie in alcuni casi anche semplici abbozzi sono state rinvenute in alcuni codici italiani e tedeschi appartenuti ad amici e allievi del maestro e contribuiscono a delineare nel complesso la sua figura di intellettuale.
