Today, integrative taxonomy is often considered the gold standard when it comes to species recognition and delimitation. Using the Tetrix bipunctata complex, we here present a case where even integrative taxonomy may reach its limits. The Tetrix bipunctata complex consists of two morphs, bipunctata and kraussi, which are easily distinguished by a single character, the length of the hind wing. Both morphs are widely distributed in Europe and reported to occur over a large area in sympatry, where they occasionally may live also in syntopy. The pattern has led to disparate classifications, as on the one extreme, the morphs were treated merely as forms or subspecies of a single species, on the other, as separate species. For this paper, we re-visited the morphology by using multivariate ratio analysis (MRA) of 17 distance measurements, checked the distributional data based on verified specimens and examined micro-habitat use. We were able to confirm that hind wing length is, indeed, the only morphological difference between bipunctata and kraussi. We were also able to exclude a mere allometric scaling. The morphs are, furthermore, largely sympatrically distributed, with syntopy occurring regularly. However, a microhabitat niche difference can be observed. Ecological measurements in a shared habitat confirm that kraussi prefers a drier and hotter microhabitat, which possibly also explains the generally lower altitudinal distribution. Based on these results, we can exclude classification as subspecies, but the taxonomic classification as species remains unclear. Even with different approaches to classify the Tetrix bipunctata complex, this case is, therefore, not settled. We recommend continuing to record kraussi and bipunctata separately. 27 pp., 10 figs, 3 tabs, gr. 8 [16.5 x 23.7 cm].…

Soft cover. Etat : Very Good. No Dust Jacket. BIR 022860 LIVEZEY Collection of four articles and pamphlets by Lehmann, diverse publishers and dates, under one loose soft cover. All signed and inscribed by author. Solid and clean, one has exterior foxing. Illustrated (illustrateur).

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. First Edition. First printing of the true first edition, published in 1938 - the first of three volumes of New Writing published by The Hogarth Press - each volume edited by John Lehmann, Christopher Isherwood and Stephen Spender. With eight pages of photographic plates, chosen and arranged with the assistance of Humphrey Spender. ***Very good in pale-yellow cloth-covered boards with dark-blue titles to the spine and front board. The boards show some rubbing and marks commensurate with age and handling, but are generally clean. Edges of boards slightly rubbed. Head and tail of spine slightly creased. Page block edges nice and clean, with the top edge stained green by the publisher, now gently faded. The fore-edge is untrimmed. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally near fine, with no previous ownership inscriptions, but with an attractive bookplate from John Bernard Kilfeather on the front pastedown. No off-setting or foxing to the endpapers, and the interior pages are also clean and unmarked. No foxing. No creases or tears. ***In a very good typographical dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 6s. net. The dustwrapper is complete, with just some very slight loss at the top and tail of the spine and corner tips. Edges of dustwrapper slightly creased and rubbed, with a couple of small closed tears. There is a small splash-stain on the front panel, and some overall browning to the dustwrapper. The spine is unfaded. ***240 pages. 224mm x 150mm. ***'It is now three years since "New Writing" was launched, and four or five since a small group of writers began to discuss the outlines of the project among themselves. --- Since the publication of the first number, the trend of events in Europe, and the world, has given "New Writing" an even greater significance for the younger writers, and at the same time the very fact of its existence has encouraged a new kind of writer to come forward. Both these developments have stimulated interest in fresh aspects not only of literature but also of the other arts, and "New Writing" found that further needs were arising which demanded to be met as urgently as the old. It is for this reason that with the present number a New Series has been inaugurated with several additional features to extend its scope: "New Writing" believes that a living publication should grow as life itself grows and changes.' (Quote taken from the editors' Foreword) ***First printing of the true first edition, published in 1938, with a complete original dustwrapper. Uncommon thus. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.…

First trade edition which consists of 2,000 copies. 8vo. Pictorial hopsacking, yellowish/orange end sheets, colored top edges,xv [3], 226 pp., preface, illustrated, maps, appendices, bibliography, index, One illustration preceding the frontispiece by Jose Cisneros. Thoroughly researched work tracing the development of ranching in south Texas, with special emphasis on the often overlooked sheep-raising activity. Due to severe problems with overgrazing, many ranches eventually changed from sheep to cattle ranching. The Farias Ranch, Bar S Ranch, Case Ranch, Bunce Ranch, and the Callaghan Ranch are among the many recorded in this book. An excellent work, further enhanced by excerpts from letters of Walter Meek, an early resident on the sheep-raising frontier. Fine in fine dust jacket.…
