Hardbound. Blue cloth on boards, glossy color pictorial DJ on top of additional kraft paper DJ, both glued to cover, 231 pp, 195 BW plates 275 illustrations, 5 in color. A library copy. Dutch painting and drawing owe their ever-increasing popularity all the world over not only to their greatest exponents such as Rembrandt and Van Gogh, but also to the wealth and variety of the art as a whole. The author of this book, Dr. Van Gelder, has hit upon a particularly attractive and worth-while demarcation in choosing as his subject the relationship between Dutch artists and their own country, as expressed in their work. For frequently in their best works these painters and draughtsmen portrayed their country as they saw it -- in landscapes, town scenes and interiors of houses with their occupants -- so unwittingly providing irreplaceable pictures of the time in which they lived. G, DJ frayed on outer edges, library label at bottom of DJ spine, cloth and board cover has good edges, front inside hinge splitting at title page, library stamps on inside back cover, text page edges somewhat age-yellowed. A good reading copy.…
