FROM THE COVER: Eric Vertue is prominent in the Cape Town Photographic Society, of which he is an honorary life member. He has been editor of the bulletin of the Photographic Society of South Africa and is much concerned with the train…ing of amateurs in the techniques of photography. Mr Vertue's love of photography led him to an interest in photographing South African historical architecture. He was leader of the Cape Town Photographic Society's Surver Group which did invaluable work in recording, photographically and otherwise, much of the Cape's architectural heritage. The publication entitled From The Days That Are Gone, which resulted from the group's activities, is a fitting proof of their labours. Appointed to the Vational Monuments Council in 1968, Eric Vertue has become a leading figure in preservation. He served on the Tulbagh Restoration Committee and played an important part in the restoration of the Drostdy at Tulbagh, which was undertaken by the National Monuments Council. He is a member of the Table Mountain Preservation Board and for many years served on both the local and the national committee of the Simon van der Stel Foundation. He has been honoured with associateships of the Photographic Society of South Africa for his contribution to photography in this country, as well as by the Royal Photo graphic Society of Great Britain for his photographs of South African historical architecture. The rare award of a Gold Medal by the National Monuments Council was made in 1975.
