It is precisely from these irreducible contradictions that Goya's art draws its magical fascination. Spanning more than 60 years, Goya's career covers a period ranging from Rococo to Romanticism. He depicted saints and criminals, witches and demons, pushing open the gate to realms in which the boundaries between reality and fantasy become blurred. In his art, Goya shows himself a keen observer of the drama unfolding between reason and irrationality, dreams and nightmares. The exhibition brings together around 70 paintings and more than 100 masterful drawings and prints, inviting viewers on a journey into the beautiful and the unfathomable. Deckelfuss, sonst tadell. - Die von Louise Bachofen-Burckhardt (1845?1920) zum Andenken an ihren verstorbenen Gatten 1904 errichtete Professor Johann Jakob Bachofen-Stiftung war der zahlenmäßig größte Depositär in der Altmeistersammlung des Kunstmuseums Basel. Sie nannte 303…Gemälde vom Spätmittelalter bis an die Wende zum 20. Jahrhundert ihr Eigen, die sie 2015 dem Museum schenkte. Unter diesen befinden sich Hauptwerke von Bartolomeo Vivarini, Lucas Cranach d. Ä., Hans Memling, Jan Brueghel d. Ä., Frans II. Francken, Dirck Hals, Nicolaes Maes, Nicolaes Berchem, Jacob van Ruisdael, Jan van Goyen, Harmen Steenwyck, Rachel Ruysch, Jean-Étienne Liotard und Alexandre-François Desportes.Im vorliegenden Band wird erstmals dieser außergewöhnliche Bestand gemäß dem heutigen Forschungsstand gewürdigt und das Leben der Sammlerin und Stifterin nachgezeichnet. Zahlreiche bislang unpublizierte Dokumente erlauben es, zu ihrem 100. Todestag Licht auf Louise Bachofen-Burckhardt und ihr Agieren auf dem boomenden Kunstmarkt um 1900 zu werfen.Beraten wurde sie dabei vom Generaldirektor der Königlich Preußischen Kunstsamm lungen Wilhelm von Bode; ihre hier erstmals ausgewerteten Briefe an ihn gewähren daher auch neue Einblicke in das Wirken des weltberühmten Berliner Museumsmanns. 1600 gr.
