Verslag van zijn belevenissen door Albrecht Nicolaas van Aerssen Beijeren van Voshol, die tijdens Napoleons tocht naar Rusland in 1812 door kozakken gevangen werd genomen. In 1812 trok Napoleon met de grootste legermacht ooit naar Rusland. De 26-jarige Hollandse beroepsmilitair, kapitein Albrecht Nicolaas van Aerssen Beijeren van Voshol, nam deel aan deze invasie. Op 31 oktober 1812 raakte hij gewond aan zijn rechter dijbeen tijdens gevechten bij het dorp Tsjasniki in het huidige Belarus. De volgende dag werd hij door een kozak gevangen genomen, die hem ook in zijn linkerbeen en linkervoet verwondde. Hierdoor was hij ongeveer anderhalf jaar krijgsgevangene in dat deel van het tsarenrijk. Marnix van Aerssen (1937) presenteert het (oorspronkelijk Franstalige) verslag van de krijgsgevangenschap van zijn overgrootvader, officier in Napoleon's Grande Armee. De Nederlandse vertaling is van zijn grootvader. De gevangenschap begon op 1 november 1812, wat deze publicatie, precies 200 jaar later, bijzonder actueel maakt. In de inleiding schetst Marnix van Aerssen de verhoudingen in Europa en de rampzalige veldtocht van Napoleon. In het nawoord beschrijft hij hoe het zijn voorvader na terugkeer in Nederland verging. De vertaling is in zijn bezit; het oorspronkelijke verslag bevindt zich in het Nationaal Archief.…
