Moving beyond a static description of rules, the author focuses on the dynamic process of conflict management and the negotiation of norms in everyday life. The work meticulously documents the subtle yet powerful mechanisms used to handle deviance, including gossip, ridicule, shaming, and social avoidance. Central to the analysis is the role of the ihumataq (a respected leader or person with good judgment), whose authority is earned and situational rather than formally appointed. Through detailed case studies, the book demonstrates how the community navigates tensions between individual autonomy and collective cohesion, providing a profound ethnographic account of an acephalous legal system in action. -- "Alcohol, drug and solvent abuse, suicide and criminal behaviour are some of the serious social problems that at present plague the Inuit ('Eskimos') of northern Canada. The social problems of one group of Inuit, the 'Iglulingmiut' of the Canadian Eastern Arctic are examined in this book. In order to understand the nature and sociogenetical background of their problems, an extensive historical and legal-anthropological analysis is made of Iglulingmiut contacts with the outside world. Although the focus is on changes in the values, norms and behaviour pertaining to order and control and to the role played by Canadian legal agencies in these changes, the use of a new 'figurational' perspective also provides the reader of this study with a thorough and encompassing analysis of the process of social, economical, political, religious and mental changes that evolved in Iglulingmiut social life during the last century and a half.".
