Association copy, signed on the title page by both Wallace and his son and co-author Page Stegner, with an inscription in Wallace's hand: "For Randy Bean, with the warmest wishes for a long fellowship." "Long" is underlined for emphasis. He means fellowsh…ip in two senses, as journalist Randy Bean had arrived at Stanford as a member of the 1982 class of the prestigious Professional Journalism Fellowships at Stanford University (later renamed the John S. Knight Journalism Fellowships). But her fellowship with Stegner and Stanford would deepen from there. After a stint at KQED, she returned to the campus in Palo Alto to found the Stanford Channel in 1995. And she produced Becoming Stanford, a two-part documentary on the university's first 100 years that featured Stegner prominently. A nice association and gift for a Cardinal fan. With photos by Eliot Porter. The book is fine. The jacket is very good with sun-fading to spine, minor wear to a few corners, and a small and discrete damp stain with half-inch tear along spine, both of which are not very noticeable. Uncommon when signed by both Wallace and Page Stegner. // Wood (+) River (=) Books specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, and environmental literature, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions.

Full-Leather, first US SIGNED Edition, this gorgeous example of book production has one other reason all collectors; Wallace Stegner wrote an introduction which is exclusive to this issue. A Rolls Royce production standard for a riveting book, this copy is in an unread perfect condition…. This gorgeous special edition was produced exclusively for Franklin for their Signed Club members only; marbled endpapers; gilt edged pages; acid proof paper; and it is signed by the author on a special front page. Beautiful typography, the sort that does not call attention to itself, but to the words of the text. This is a great edition for the collector, because it is built to last. And frankly that is the way the author wrote it, which makes this an heirloom production. Wallace Earle Stegner moved around a lot, his autobiography claimed "twenty places in eight states and Canada", mostly in the West. At the University of Utah he was required to choose a major, one economics course made him change it. He related that his professors urged him to go to graduate school, after earning his BA at Utah in 1930 he added an MA from the University of Iowa in 1932. He taught at the University of Wisconsin and Harvard before settling in at Stanford where he developed the creative writing program. He became an advocate for wilderness and preservation issues, he was assistant to Stewart Udall at the Dept. of the Interior and a director of the Sierra Club. But mostly he wrote, over a dozen novels, even more nonfiction books, and a half dozen collections of essays and short stories. One of the great 20th Century writers. With a long introduction by editor Malc…olm Cowley and Whitman's own original introduction following. Likely this copy was a gift from or via Malcolm Cowley who was a friend and for a time a colleague recruited by Stegner to the creative writing program at Stanford University. In turn this book was a gift from Stegner to writer and poet John Danieland comes from Daniel's library. John Daniel is afour-time recipient of the Oregon Book Awards among other honors. He started his career as a Wallace Stegner Fellow at Stanford University and afterward lived in a cottage on Stegner's property in Los Altos Hills for five years (during the years in whichCrossing to Safetywas written). He's written movingly about Stegner in several essays collected in his booksThe Trail HomeandThe Far Corner. Octavo in green cloth with a black buckram spine bordered by a narrow gilt band. In a paper slipcase with a large title plate. A very near fine book with a touch of rubbing to corners. The slipcase is very good with rubbing and some wear to corners; on its rear face, there is some sunning at top and a one-inch damp stain at lower left edge.

Anoblong 64mo (sexagesimo), it'sdesigned to fit in a soldier's pocket. On the rear of the foldout map, a gift inscription from these owners, passing the book on, reads: "To George + Sue Varian, their families and Jane L…owenthal, Christmas 1989. [from] Artemas + Ed Ginzton." Physicist and entrepreneur Ed Ginzton lived in Los Altos Hills like Stegner and, also like the author, holds an important place in Stanford and Bay Area history. This from the Stanford press release upon his death: "In the lore of Silicon Valley, Edward Ginzton is not as well known as William Hewlett and David Packard, who started their electronics company in a Palo Alto garage. Nor is he as well known as William Shockley, who headed the group of Stanford scientists who were trying to commercialize the transistor. But perhaps he should be." Ginzton came to Stanford where he collaborated with Russell and Sigurd Varian, William Hansen, and others in the physics department who were doing pioneering work in the field of microwave technology. During WWII, he worked on the klystron, a powerful new kind of radio tube invented by the Varians and incorporated in radar. "After the end of the war, Ginzton returned to Stanford, where he continued to work in the microwave field, including incorporation of klystron tubes in linear accelerators used to probe the basic structure of subatomic matter. In the 1950s he headed a team of Stanford physicists who designed a one billion electron volt particle accelerator that was housed in the Hansen Experimental Physics Laboratory. When it was completed, it was the most powerful machine of its type in the world. He also played an important role in obtaining federal funding for the 2-mile linear accelerator that forms the backbone of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, and served as SLAC's director during the research and development phase of the project, known at that time as 'Project M.'" In 1948, he also co-found the influential Varian Associates company with the Varian brothers, which among other major successes developed MRI technology. This book was passed down to the son of one of the Varian brothers. A very good book, lacking the dust jacket: A mild bump to lower edge of front board. Corners firm with only light wear. Two swaths of brown staining to bottom of text block (each about the size of a quarter) and some spotting/dust soiling to upper face of text block.
