Despite the number of excellent volumes that have appeared during the past two decades describing radioisotope techniques, it appears that a need still exists for a systematic treatment of this subject which covers the necessary fundamental background as well as up-to-date developments, such as liquid scintillation counting. As the title implies, this volume is written primarily for students and investigators in the biological sciences. However, the approach and contents will be found equally worthwhile by readers in the physical, medical, and engineering sciences. Specifically, the purpose is to provide general background information in nuclear physics and radiochemistry and to stress the considerations of radiotracer experimental design necessary for the successful application of radioactive isotopes as a research tool.
