Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Thick quarto. 744, 138, 745-1008, 56pp. Illustrated from seven engraved plates plus an engraved fold-out frontispiece measuring approximately 17" x 10½". Run-marbled calf boards, each with a decorative gilt boarder, spine with raised bands creating five compartments of varying sizes with decorative gilt borders, two gilt devices, and "Holy Bible" stamped in gilt in the middle, marbled page edges and marbled endpapers. Boards and edges worn with some scuff marks, spine worn with the leather creasing; owner label on the front free pastedown, owner inscription and descendant's name stamp on the first free flyleaf, owner inscription repeated in pencil on the verso of the rear free endpaper, and scattered foxing and soiling throughout with the text remaining perfectly legible, overall very good. Includes three bound-in pages of family records for the Warfel family beginning with John Warfel and his wife Maria Eschelman who married April 20, 1824; the inscription states that this Bible was "bought in Boston August 22nd, 1828." They managed to get their family records printed or stamped into the book making them very easy to read. Laid in are six pieces of The New Era Printing House stationary sewn together and written on the rectos, documenting the family history of the Bachler family (in 1887 Elizabeth A. Bachler married John G. Warfel). Also laid in are two newspaper clippings regarding the death of Albert K. Warfel, one clipping regarding the death of John Warfel, and one clipping discussing the success of John B. Warfel, with the headline reading, "Lawyers Who Quit The Bar And Won Distinction As Journalists." John B. Warfel founded the Independent Republican paper *The New Era* with editor J.M.W. Geist in 1874, the agreement being that Warfel would provide the initial investment while Geist provided the editorial knowledge. The paper was quite successful and the clipping makes a point of informing the reader that Warfel wasn't a journalist, just a very talented business man. The short history of the Bachler family is also of note, Elizabeth's father came to the U.S. in 1836 from Tyrol where he led a "concert company" and "received several medals which were given him by the king for his fine singing." And Elizabeth's mother's father supposedly fought in the battle of Waterloo. A nice example of a mid-19th century family Bible with an interesting association.…
