Paperback. Etat : Near Fine. 1st. ix, 262 pages, illustrations (some colour); 27 cm. Published on occasion of the exhibition held at Yale Center for British Art, New Haven, Conn., September 27 to December. 30, 2001 and Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens, San Marino, Calif., February 3 to May 5, 2002. Near fine. Firm binding, clean inside copy. Light shelfwear to wraps. *** "Outside Britain itself, the richest holdings of British art are found in American collections. This extraordinary presentation of some 85 works pays tribute to this strength of American collecting, while offering a fresh and engaging account of the history of painting in Britain from the sixteenth century to the present. The selection is drawn from collections from around the United States, both public and private, and includes spectacular pictures from the Yale Center for British Art and the Huntington Art Collections in California--the two leading collections of British art in America. Among the highlights are such masterpieces as Sir Anthony Van Dyck s portrait of Queen Henrietta Maria with her dwarf, Sir Jeffrey Hudson, William Hogarth s Beggar s Opera, Thomas Gainsborough s Blue Boy, Henry Fuseli s Nightmare, John Constable s Hadleigh Castle, J. M. W. Turner s Staffa, Fingal s Cave, and William Holman Hunt s Lady of Shalott. Following introductory essays by Malcolm Warner on anglophilia and art, and by Robyn Asleson on the history of collecting British art in the States, each painting is reproduced in color, with a discussion of its artistic importance and the circumstances of its crossing the Atlantic." - Publisher. *** CONTENTS: Foreword, by Constance Clement; Anglophilia into Art, by Malcolm Warner; Atlantic Crossings: British Paintings in America, 1630-1930, by Robyn Asleson; Catalogue. From the preface: "Over the centuries London has been visited by many artists from abroad and this exhibition is an attempt to illustrate how each visitor has in turn found inspiration from the city. The exhibition interprets this 'image' of London, reveals how the city has changed through four hundred years, and explores the idea of the city in the mind of the visitors and their response to it. Wyngaerde was the earlist artist to attempt to represent the city with relative accuracy. He conceived London as a great Gothic city with many towers and spires. Thomas Wyek may have witnessed the Great Fire, and he certainly painted several views of it. After the Fire, London was rapidly rebuilt and expanded. The subsequent completion of the new cathedral and the City's increasing commercial success attracted many traveller-artists. With its bustling market, Covent Garden was a favourite subject of the 18th-century artists such as Van Aken and Angillis. By contrast the serene Thames views of Canaletto and Joli recall Venice, and their interpretation of London as a city of grace and enlightenment seem more in keeping with the neo-classical order that fashioned the second half of the 18th Century. In the 19th Century artists began to depict the darker side of London. Focusing upon scenes of labour, poverty and suffering in an oppressive industrial environment, Géricault and Doré portrayed the Babylonian image of London. Nevertheless, Victorian London was also shown as a city of success and wealth. The river scenes of Whistler, and the busy, yet fashionable Street scenes of Bianche, Tissot and De Nittis represent it as essentially a hive of activity, business and busy-ness. Wistler and Monet were also inspired by the atmosphere of London, the foggy and nocturnal views . Keywords: Wyngaerde, Thomas Wych, Van Aken Angillis, Canaletto Joli Venice, Lavor, Pverty, Suffering, Industrial, Gericault, Dore, Babylonian, Victorian, London, Whistler, Street Scenes, Blanche, Tissot De Nittis, Monet.…
