Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. WALTER E. WEYL AMERICAN WORLD POLICIES 1917 FIRST PRINTING HANDSOME BOOK. I am pleased to be able to offer a classic book by a Progressive American thinker and writer of the early Twentieth Century: American World Policies, by Walter E. Weyl. Wikipedia has a fair bit about the man and his work, and I am quoting some of it here below: Short bio excerpt from Wikipedia (with my thanks and occasional contributions) Walter Edward Weyl (March 11, 1873 November 9, 1919) was a writer and speaker, an intellectual leader of the Progressive movement in the United States. As a strong nationalist, his goal was to remedy the relatively weak American national institutions with a strong state. Weyl wrote widely on issues of economics, labor, public policy, and international affairs in numerous books, articles, and editorials; he was a coeditor of the highly influential The New Republic magazine, 1914-1916. His most influential book, The New Democracy (1912) was a classic statement of democratic meliorism, revealing his path to a future of progress and modernization based on middle class values, aspirations and brain work. It articulated the general mood: America to-day is in a somber, soul-questioning mood. We are in a period of clamor, of bewilderment, of an almost tremulous unrest. We are hastily revising all our social conceptions. We are profoundly disenchanted with the fruits of a century of independence. In 1915, during World War I, he traveled in Germany and Russia, publishing his observations in American World Policies (1917) and The End of the War (1918). American World Policies (1917), published before the outcome of World War I was known, examined the profound changes it has caused in the American psyche: The Great War has thrown America back upon itself. It has come as a test and challenge to all our theories. Suddenly, yet subtly, it has shaken our optimism and undermined our faith in the peaceful progress of humanity. Our isolation is gone, and with it our sense of security and self-direction. Americans, who a few days ago would have dared to abolish army and navy as a supreme earnest of good faith, reluctantly agree to arm. 'Self-defence,' they now say, 'comes before progress. We must lay aside our hopes of a world at peace and must guard our gates.'" You are going to be proud to have colleagues see this book on your shelves. This book is bound in dark Navy blue cloth with blind-stamped framing and bright gilt titles panels, on cover and spine. It measures 5 ½ x 8 inches and includes 307 pages plus 4 pages of publisher s adverts and was published by The Macmillan Company of New York, dated 1917 and the First Edition/First Printing (so stated). Condition: This vintage book is in near fine condition. The hard covers are clean, bright and with its distinctive title panels, the overall effect is very attractive. Inside, the book is unmarked and the pages are clean and bright, from cover to cover. There is some very light foxing on the endpapers which does not really penetrate the book. The page edges are darkened and lightly soiled and stained but do not detract from the overall attractiveness of the book. Both hinges are fully intact, and the binding is tight, sound and square. This book is not ex-library or a remainder. You will not be disappointed. …

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. A very good copy of the first hard cover edition, lacking a dust-jacket (perhaps as issued. Previous owner's name modestly in ink atop the front endpaper, else the text is wholly unmarked, pristine, and the blue cloth binding with gilt lettering is remarkably bright and fresh in appearance (see scan).
