This book describes three of Wharton's journeys in this era, travelling in a chauffeur-driven Panhard with servants and luggage sent on ahead. The journeys are: a t…hree-week run from Boulogne to Clermont-Ferrand to Paris in May 1906; a circuit of the South-West, the Pyrenees and the Rhone Valley in March-April 1907, accompanied by Henry James; and a short weekend in Picardy in 1907. Wharton wrote of her flights for the Atlantic Monthly and collected them into the present volume, which was first publ.

Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Very Good. First Edition. A pleasing very good+ example of contemporary leather binding commisioned by the Paul Elder Company early in the Twentieth Century. The gilt top edge is a tad dull, while the lush marbled endpapers are quite clean, with a tasteful armorial bookplate on the front pastedown. Features 52…lovely illustrations, 26 of which are the work of Maxfield Parrish, of which several are in color. (The dark greenish leather spine has discolored to a burnished brown, with a small ghost from a sticker at base, but the ribbed compartments remain attractive with their gilt tracings. Hints of rubbing to marbling on covers, with some rubbing to edges) A very lovely copy.

In publisher's marbled cardboard slipcase, with titling stamped in gilt on spine, and light tanning, cracks, and rubbing; Good. First published in 1911, this edition includes special contents with an updated copyright date (1939). Wharton's novel explores the love triangle between a sick wife, her husband, and her cousin through an unnamed narrator. Its film adaptation (1993), directed by John Madden, starred Liam Neeson, Patricia Arquette, Joan Allen, and Tate Donovan. [84823]. Signed.

Tall octavo (23.5cm); full navy blue cloth, with titling and pictorial elements designed by Margaret Armstrong; titling and decorations stamped in gilt on spine, and in sage green, yellow, and pink on front cover; dustjacket; xviii,[2],3-290pp, with frontispiece, title page vignette…, 31 inserted plates of illustrations (halftones), and one map. Mild crimping to spine ends, some trivial wear to lower board edges, else a fresh, very Near Fine copy, with the decorative elements entirely unrubbed. In the original pictorial dustjacket, reproducing the title page vignette on the front panel; edgeworn, lightly dust-soiled, with a hint of sunning to spine, a few tiny stains, small nicks and tears to extremities, a triangular chip to lower edge of rear panel, and a handful of clear tape mends on verso; Very Good+. In Morocco was the result of Wharton's trip to France's fledgling North African colony during the summer of 1917. Her book was "part travelog, part exploration of the lives of Moroccan women, and part procolonial tract. Packed with gorgeous visual writing, this odd little book showed Wharton at the height of her descriptive powers and at her socially most observant. It helped shape American and British views of Morocco as an exotic travel destination, but it also seems to have nurtured Wharton's mature masterpiece, The Age of Innocence. Like that great novel of manners, in Morocco was inspired by the pageantry of a society and its most stifling customs" (Hindley, Meredith.
