(B&W/color photographs) An annual publication (that only lasted for one more edition after ths one) that attempted to present "coverage of new films on a world scale: from U.S.A. where Arthur Knight takes in the general scene, through Poland, Germany, France, England and Australia and rounding off with a special article by David Robinson on Japanese film." There are 18 articles and essays in all, the highlights being: "Problems of a Bengal Film Maker," by Satyajit Ray; "The Novelist and the Cinema--A Personal Experience," by Graham Greene; "Devil of a New World," by Jean Renoir; "What Film Shall We Make Next?" by Carl Foreman; "Experiment at Brussels," by Karel Reisz; and "Ribbon of Dreams," by Orson Welles. This optical illusion causes the audience to perceive continuous motion between separate objects viewed rapidly in succession. A film is created by photographing actual scenes with a motion picture camera; by photographing drawings or miniature models using traditional animation techniques; by means of CGI and computer animation; or by a combination of some or all of these techniques and other visual effects. The word "cinema", short for cinematography, is often used to refer to the industry of films and filmmaking or to the art of filmmaking itself.
