Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book provides a vital historical account of a groundbreaking investigation led by the Medical Society of the State of New York. Published in 1865, it is one of the first publications to investigate the deplorable treatment of those suffering from mental illness. Commissioned by the New York State Legislature in response to the cruelties perpetrated against the insane, the author meticulously documents the appalling conditions in which the mentally ill were kept. Through a series of questionnaires and county-by-county reports, the author exposes the inhumanity and lack of care, revealing the widespread use of physical restraints, isolation, and unsanitary living conditions that were rampant in the poorhouses and asylums of the time. His findings sounded an urgent call for reform and highlighted the need for a more humane approach to mental healthcare, paving the way for advancements in the treatment of mental illness.
