Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. [From the library of Benjamin B. King.] Hardcover and dust jacket. Good binding and cover. Shelf wear. Pages unmarked. "Benjamin B. King was an intelligence officer for the British Royal Air Force during World War II. After World War 2 broke out in Europe in September 1939, he joined the British Royal Air Force as a 'penguin' who could not fly because of eyesight problems. He was assigned to Coastal Command at the airbase in Wick in the very north of Scotland, which provided defense for Britain in the North Sea, engaging the Germany Navy and Air Force. After his stint at Wick, Ben was transferred to the vital but vulnerable British base at Gibraltar off the coast of Spain, where the British monitored German and Italian military operations in the Western Mediterranean. While in Gibraltar, one of his tasks was to listen to Luftwaffe radio communications and track the movement of German and Italian airplanes. After Gibraltar, Ben was called back to Britain and assigned to the secret British code-breaking operations at Bletchley Park in England, which played a critical role in the Allies' war effort by monitoring and decoding German military communications and ultimately breaking the German Enigma code." - Obit.

Hardcover. Etat : Fine condition. Etat de la jaquette : No jacket, probably as issued. First Naval Institute Press Edition. Annapolis, Maryland:: Naval Institute Press, 1989. A bright, clean, square, tight copy. Sharp corners. Inner hinges are perfect. No owner's name or bookplate. No remainder mark. Pages are fresh and crisp -- probably never read. No underlining. No highlighting. No margin notes. This edition is a reprint of the 1843 original newly enhanced with a introduction & fascinating notes by William S. Dudley, plus an index. This is the true story of sailor Ned Myers as told to James Fenimore Cooper. Best known for his many novels, Cooper could write with great authenticity about the sea having spent a year as a common seaman on the merchant ship Sterling in 1806-07. A volume from the Naval Institute Press CLASSICS OF NAVAL LITERATURE series. Handsomely bound in the original blue cloth, lettered in shiny gold over dark blue panels on the spine and front cover. Complete with the blue silk ribbon marker sewn into the headband. A sample from the lively text: "I walked over the ground where the explosion took place. It was a dreadful sight; the dead being so mutilated that it was scarcely possible to tell their colour. I saw gun-barrels bent nearly double. I think we saw Sir Roger Sheafe, the British General, galloping across the field, by himself, a few minutes before the explosion. At all events, we saw a mounted officer, and fired at him. He galloped up to the government-house, dismounted, went in, remained a short time, and then galloped out of town.". First Naval Institute Press Edition. Hardcover. Fine condition./No jacket, probably as issued. 8vo. xix, 290pp.

Hardback. William Cooper; Introduction by Malcolm Bradbury, Macmillan . Author: William Cooper; Introduction by Malcolm BradburyBinding: HardbackPublished: Macmillan , 1975Condition:Book: GoodJacket: Wear and tearPages: YellowedMarkings: No markingsA classic of English literature, William Cooper's "Scenes From Provincial Life" is a witty and insightful novel that chronicles the life of Joe Lunn, a young man navigating the complexities of post-war provincial England. This semi-autobiographical work offers a keen observation of social mores, academic life, and the often-humorous challenges of personal relationships. The narrative masterfully blends satire with a poignant understanding of human nature, presenting a vivid portrait of a bygone era and the universal search for meaning and connection. Hardback.

A Fine book in a Fine dust wrapper. 1840 marked the first time United States sea captain William Dane Phelps (1802-1875) visited California. He stayed there until 1842 but returned in 1845. This reprinted journal provides insight into Phelps's lesser-known ventures along the California coast in the year 1846. Excerpt from the Introduction: "Following his arrival at San Diego in January 1846, Phelps found the next twelve months to be full of incident until, in December, the journal ends, apparently sent home with the Sterling. Although Phelps throughout remained primarily concerned with his maritime and mercantile responsibilities, he was a participant in two events of historical importance. The first, on 1 July, was the spiking of the Mexican guns at Fort Point (at the southern end of the modern Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco). The journal gives the bare details; Phelps's memoirs, written a quarter-century later, add further color. Neither account mentions the fact that Phelps later billed the United States government for $10,000 to compensate for his assistance to Fremont and his men in this venture. (In the end Phelps was awarded $50 by a claims court for his trouble, after Major Archibald Gillespie testified that at the time there had been no actual physical danger from any local opposition.) A more important crisis, which Phelps witnessed but in which he played little active role, was the reconquest of the Los Angeles area by Commodore Robert F. ('Fighting Bob') Stockton, who had replaced Sloat in mid-July 1846.". Signed by the Editor.
