This edition contains xxi, 514 pages with illustrations, diagrams, bibliographical references, and an index. The copyright page reco…rds reprintings in November 1930, January 1931, and February 1931; the second edition was originally issued in 1930. Dampier-Whetham follows scientific inquiry from the ancient world and Middle Ages through the Renaissance, the Newtonian era, nineteenth-century physics and biology, and the emergence of modern scientific philosophy. Rather than treating discoveries in isolation, he places them within the larger history of religion, metaphysics, social thought, and changing conceptions of nature. Condition: Original dark blue cloth boards with blind-stamped borders and gilt spine lettering. Boards show rubbing, scattered spotting, surface marks, and wear at the corners. Spine is substantially faded and rubbed, with fraying and cloth loss at the head and additional wear at the foot; gilt lettering is dulled but remains readable. Page edges are age-toned. Previous owner's ink signature appears on the front free endpaper. Interior pages show general toning and occasional light spotting consistent with age. No dust jacket. A complete, serviceable reading and reference copy with notable exterior wear. First published in 1929 and quickly revised and reprinted, Dampier-Whetham's work became a frequently issued general history of science. Contemporary reviews appeared in both Nature and The American Historical Review, reflecting the book's early scholarly reception and broad interdisciplinary scope.
