Corners bumped and fraying, most notable at crown and foot of spine where cloth is slightly chipped away. Fading along edges and hinges, some minor rubbing to covers. All lettering is clean and legible. No date on title page or colophon. No separate copyright page. 164 pages. All clean and crisp, lightly and evenly toned. Some faint foxing to edges of plates, never extending to illustrations themselves. All plates present and neat. Tissue guards intact. Frontispiece's tissue guard is detached from binding, but still in place. Binding is cracked along front gutter, revealing binding linen. Front free endpaper through the first, more decorative title page are detached from the binding of the rest of the pages, but remain bound together. They are neatly tucked in place and not damaged by their detachment. Binding throughout the book remains strong, no further loose pages. In 1835, Bartlett first visited the United States in order to draw the buildings, towns and scenery of the northeastern states. The finely detailed steel engravings Bartlett produced were published uncolored with a text by Nathaniel Parker Willis as American Scenery; or Land, Lake, and River: Illustrations of Transatlantic Nature. American Scenery was published by George Virtue in London in 30 monthly installments from 1837 to 1839.
