Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book examines the legendary origins of the Roman people as depicted in the ancient text known as the Origo Gentis Romanae. The Origo traces the city's folklore back through the generations of its heroes, from the founders Romulus and Remus to the legendary Trojan refugee Aeneas, and all the way back to the gods Saturn and Janus. By juxtaposing the Origo with other classical texts, including the works of Virgil, Cicero, Tacitus, and Livy, the author demonstrates that the stories in the Origo rely heavily on the writings of the Roman antiquarian Varro from the 1st century BC. The author argues that the Origo is much more than a mere retelling of old wives' tales, but rather a sophisticated attempt to understand the significance of the Roman past in the social and political climate of the third century AD. The work sheds new light on the complex relationship between myth, historiography, and politics in the ancient world, and it will be of interest to anyone interested in the origins of Rome, classical mythology, or the history of historiography.
