Zunächst sollte vor allem der Ruf nach synoptischen Tabellen eine Befriedigung finden. Was nun vorliegt, ist tatsächlich ein Text- und ein Tabellenband zu den Wald- und Gebüschgesellschaften Österreichs. Bestimmungsschlüssel bieten auch dem Nicht-Syntaxonomen die Möglichkeit, konkrete Bestände bis auf die Assoziation hin zu bestimmen. Dahinter stehen mehr als 20.000 Vegetationsaufnahmen, die mit Hilfe von numerischen Verfahren und durch intensive Literaturarbeit klassifiziert wurden. Die Autoren haben sich bemüht, über die Grenzen zu blicken und so ein Bild aller mitteleuropäischen Wälder zu entwerfen. TABELLENBAND: Pflanzensoziologische Tabellen dienen zum Beleg der Datengrundlage, zur umfassenden floristischen Beschreibung der Gesellschaften und als Bestimmungshilfe. Sie stellen die Synthese nahezu aller aus Österreich verfügbaren Vegetationsaufnahmen von Wäldern und Gebüschen dar. In diese Tabellen sind nur Einzelaufnahmen eingeflossen, keine bereits zu Stetigkeitstabellen zusammengefassten Aufnahmekollektive! Am Beginn jeder Tabelle stehen die Arten der dominanten Schicht. Danach folgen die Arten des Unterwuchses, geordnet nach ihrem syntaxonomischen Verhalten. Jede Art scheint nur einmal in der Tabelle auf.
