Soft cover. Etat : Good. 3rd Edition. A good copy. The Masterton the first settlers knew was not the leveled and well-ordered town of today. Although there were significant areas of grassland and fern, there were also some large pockets of lowland forest. As Gareth Winter writes: "Masterton's progress was slow at first. Queen Street was an unlined pathway, formed by digging ditches in the boggy ground to the side and throwing the refuse onto the roadway to elevate it. Stumps were not removed, but buried under the spoil." The Look of Masterton tells of the town's beginnings and progress over the last 150 years. With an informative text indicating the milestones along the way, the story is principally told through a collection of photographs - many published for the first time - that brilliantly evoke Masterton's transformation from wooden village to thriving 21st century town. Soft cover. Etat : Very Good. A very clean copy with an insciption. Feels unread. Masterton and Greytown, further down the Wairarapa valley, were the first planned inland towns in New Zealand. Masterton?s history now stretches back over 150 years. Gareth Winter writes: "Masterton?s progress was slow at first. Queen Street was an unlined pathway, formed by digging ditches in the boggy ground to the side and throwing the refuse onto the roadway to elevate it. Stumps were not removed, but buried under the spoil." Just how Masterton's streets came to be named is a series of fascinating stories, often full of mystery and sometimes hidden in confusion. There is a King Street not named after a king at all. One of the longest streets was once known as Short Street and one street in the middle of town had to be officially opened recently so it could be officially closed! Mayors, members of parliament, prominent settlers, priests and military leaders - all have had streets named after them, and many of the street names carry wonderful stories from the past.…

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. 125 pages. Inscription on front end page/inside cover Brancepeth was one of the largest sheep stations New Zealand had ever known. It was in 1856 that four hundred Merinos began grazing in the wilderness of the Wairarapa's eastern hills, but by the turn nof the century 100,000 more were spr ead over a giant 31,000 hectares of productive hill-country. In the earliest hea dy days of its settlement, a single pit-sawn whare with a hand-hewn shingled roo f stood at the heart of the station. But following the formation of the Beetham- Williams family partnership, known as The Firm, Brancepeth quickly prospered. An enormous 32-room homestead with a battlemented tower was constructed, as well a s a grand stable with a coach house keeping a large collection of horses, buggie s and motorcars, a library of 2000 Victorian books, a school, a smithy, store an d a cookhouse serving the station and its 300 staff clustered amidst the hill co untry. The glory days of this vast farm have passed, but at its heart the remark able homestead and the precinct of buildings still bearing the Brancepath name p rovide a glimpse into a long-forgotten world. .--Back cover.…

Soft cover. Etat : Near Fine. A very clean copy. A history of Masterton's parks and public reserves, centred on Queen Elizabeth Park and the land set aside as a "publick reserve" when the town was surveyed in 1854. It traces the park's development from a rough grazing paddock into an important civic and recreational space, encompassing sporting events, public celebrations, horticulture, cemeteries and changing leisure activities. Rich in local stories and personalities, it also records unusual episodes from Masterton's past while showing how successive generations shaped and used the community's green spaces.…

Hardcover. Etat : As New. 1st Edition. This copy feels unread and is signed by the author. Two Men of Mana is a colourful collection of stories about Wairarapa's early days. The 25 chapters bring 19th century New Zealand to life with true tales about people, places and memorable moments. There are the challenges of pioneering life - from arduous journeys to the ever-present fear of fire - and the personalities who helped shape settler society. There are poignant love stories and no-holds-barred politics. There are shipwrecks on the coast and a tumultuous reception when the railway finally reached Masteron. These illustrated stories, written by Gareth Winter over several years, draw on the extensive Wairarapa Archive collection of regional records, newspapers and photographs. Signed by Author(s).…
