Paperback. Etat : New. With a foreword by Iain Sinclair. London is an ancient city, whose foundation dates back literally thousands of years into the legendary prehistory of these islands. Not surprisingly it has accumulated a large number of stories, both historic and mythical, during this period, many of which, though faithfully recorded at the time, have lain almost forgotten in dusty libraries throughout the city. The Secret Lore of London is a guide to the legends, including a discussion of their importance as part of the oral tradition of Britain, combining Prehistoric, Celtic, Arthurian, Roman, Saxon and Norman levels - each of which has contributed to the many-layered life of the city. The first part contains a unique selection of essays (some printed here for the first time) by experts in their fields, each of whom possesses a unique interest in the legends of these islands, and who have written widely on associated themes. The second part of the book will consist of a Gazetteer of the sites mentioned which are still in existence, together with various other sites of associated interest, compiled by the Editor, the contributors, and members of the London Earth Mysteries Group. This part will be fully updated and extended to include many more sites. The result is a wide ranging and wholly fascinating book, with wide sales application possible. A series of appendixes will include William Stukley's extraordinary document The Brill, which relates to the ancient prehistoric sites around the area of present day St. Pancras, and excerpts from some of the best known 19th and early 20th century works on Legendary London by Lewis Spence and Harold BayleyContributors to the book are: Nigel PennickJohn MatthewsCaroline WiseCaitlín MatthewsCarol Clancy R.J. Paperback. Etat : New. This book offers a state-of-the-art view of leather making, based on the scientific principles underpinning the technology. In particular, it contributes to the understanding of the modern leather industry, allowing practitioners to make judgements about day-to-day problems in the tannery and how change can be applied in a predictable way. Major themes running through the book are the economics and environmental impact of leather making and how these will ensure the sustainability of the industry. This second edition of Tony Covington's Tanning Chemistry is a revision, update and extension in collaboration with a new co-author, Will Wise. The update reflects the advances made in the past decade, including a discussion of the impact of new information concerning the chemistry of sulfide. The original chapters have been re-organised and new chapters on novel modes of reagent delivery and the principles of finishing are now included. Enzymology is addressed as a separate topic, as are environmental impact and the future of leather. The book will be useful to all those involved in the supply chain, from farm, through students, chemical suppliers and tanners, to leather goods brands. Leather science is the key to understanding leather technology, to make it work, to make it work better and to keep it ahead of the competition.…

Measure; 30 x 25 cm [12 x 10 inches]. Light damp mark to lower left corner, otherwise very good+. NOTE* The Pantheon was a place of public entertainment on the south side of Oxford Street, London, England. It was designed by James Wyatt and opened in 1772, closed in 1814, it caught fire in 1792. The main rotunda was one of the largest rooms built in England up to that time and had a central dome somewhat reminiscent of the celebrated Pantheon in Rome. It was built as a set of winter assembly rooms and later briefly converted into a theatre. Before being demolished in 1937, it was a bazaar and a wine merchant's show room for over a hundred years. Marks and Spencer's "Oxford Street Pantheon" branch, at 173 Oxford Street now occupies the site, the building was designed by Edward Lutyens. William Wise. (illustrateur).…

Ajouter au panierSoftcover. Etat : Good. This softcover novelization of a long running serious drama of the early 20th Century is of interest for two reasons: it contains photos of the young Douglas Fairbanks Sr. who was appearing in the play still in production, and while this softcover edition is not a first, it is a rare surviving copy of the softbound edition from a "dime novel" and "how to book" publisher, who appears to have had a significant niche in theatrical material, which as the ads strongly suggest. The theatrical angle could intersect with the dime novel, as this novelization exemplifies, but also the how-to manual as obscure titles in the ads make plain. 8vo. 18 by 12 cm. 189, [7] pp. Four plates, all photos, of the Broadway play that was still in production. Fairbanks is appears in two of the photographs. Ogilvie issued earlier a hardcover version of this novelization with eight plates. It would be an obvious cost cutting measure to reduce the number of plates when producing a cheap softbound. We note that the plates in our softcover version, other than the frontis, are placed at different junctures than any in the hardcover. We can not even say that the plates here were among those in the hardcover copy. The hardcover edition did have four pages of advertisements, but there is no overlap with the six pages of ads in our copy. We suspect that our copy was hawked primarily at the theater itself, and thus the theatrical slant to the ads. A few examples: On the rear cover is a pitch for "The New Mayor", "A Novel Founded upon George Broadhurst's play, 'The Man of the Hour". Another page is devoted to a book,"The Temptations of the Stage". Even material that at first blush may not be obviously theatrical can turn out to have nuggets that are so. Such is the case with a cheesy how-to book entitled "Old Secrets and New Discoveries", a potpourri of dubious tricks to get your way, basically. One of the techniques it supposedly imparts is how to perform the "Spirit Mysteries" like the Davenport Brothers, famous Vaudeville magicians. The cover is stained and soiled, with a few small chips and other wear. Spine base chip up to and including last two letters of title. The pages are very heavily browned and also brittle, as inevitable given the pulpy paper stock used. That said, the copy is easily readable, and we need not worry about damaging the book by mere touch; the book should be able to withstand careful handling -- requiring no special precautions -- just fine.…
