Map. Engraving with modern hand coloring. Image measures 22 5/8" x 19 1/2". This beautiful 1721 map of Pomerania, now modern-day Germany and Poland was created by Frederik De Wit. It depicts the region in great detail, showing towns, roads, bodies of water, and topographical features. Mountains and forests are rendered pictorially. It covers the area from Stralsund in German east as far as Gdansk in Poland and South to Berlin. The map is in good condition with unusual coloring attributed to Polish artist Stanislaw Szukalski. Minor creasing along original fold line, even toning, scattered foxing, and small chips and tears at margins. Frederick de Wit (1629/30--1706) was one of the foremost cartographers and map sellers in Amsterdam. He began with a small printing shop in 1654 and soon became internationally known for his city plans and wall maps of the world. His most famous work is the "Theatrum Praecipuarum Totius Europae," published after 1694, which contained 132 plans and views of European and Asian cities. By 1671, he was producing large folio atlases for both his shop and individual patrons that could contain anywhere between 15 and 150 maps. Today, these atlases grace the collections of many museums and institutions as evidence of the vibrant cartographic trade in Amsterdam in the middle- and late-17th century. De Wit's wife, Maria, sold his plates at auction after his death, where they were purchased and later published by Covens and Mortier c. 1721. Covens and Mortier would become the largest Dutch cartographic publishing house of the 18th century.…
