First edition (not stated). [6], 36, [2] pages (plus covers). Staple-bound pamphlet; H 23.5cm x L 15.25cm. Paper covers; front cover illustrated with dramatic scene of flood-born houses and debris; bottom corner of rear cover creased; slight nicks at spine ends with minor abrasion lengthwise. Sponsored by the Mayor and City Council of Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Foreword by Mayor Daniel J. Shields. Note by State Director Paul Comly French attributing authorship to Peter J. Toner of the Cambria County Unit under the editorial direction of Charles V. Waters, the pamphlet's woodcut style illustrations to Edward Giordano and Herbert Palmer, and "Johnstown and Environs" map (pgs 30-31) to Horace Allen under the direction of William J. Hagerty. Includes 2 b/w photos by US Army Corps of Engineers; Epilogue; Reference/Bibliography list. The sixteenth in a series of pamphlets published by the prolific Pennsylvania Federal Writers' Project, THE FLOODS OF JOHNSTOWN enjoyed a large printing as it was utilized in the city's lobbying effort for federal flood control aid but copies are now rather uncommon. A majority of copies encountered have a Johnstown News Company blue-ink stamp upon their front covers as that business was apparently a primary local retailer (however this copy is not marred by such a stamp). Bibliographical references: Powell 1390; Scharf & Schoyer Catalogue 532; Bienes Catalogue 215; September 1941 WPA Writers' Program Publications catalogue - page 40. Mild thumbing to fore-edges of interior leaves else a very good copy. Description copyright David Hallinan, Bookseller.

No dust jacket (i.e. lacking). Off-white/beige cloth; foxing/toning most prevalent to spine along with some soiling and slight mottling; slight rubbing loss to publisher lettering at spine heel but spine's title/author lettering and front board's stamping remains strong. Text block edges foxed. Three-line ink ownership inscription "Kathryn T. Windham . . . Selma, Alabama" at top of front pastedown; pencil date at top of ffep; April 1944 ink ownership name/address stamp of a Los Angeles resident upon title page; mild foxing/toning to front endpapers with strong toning to rear endpapers plus a few occurrences of foxing to interior leaves which otherwise remain mostly clean. Binding is firm. Some foxing to foldout color map (dated 1938) which is present in rear free endpaper pocket. Laid-in at front endpapers are two magazine clippings with Windham's ink date notations plus two color postcards both probably circa 1970s; toned note sheet also with Windam's ink writing laid-in at pages 184-185; newspaper clipping with ink date notation of April 1975 also in Windham's hand laid-in at rear endpapers. Fourteen maps amongst text including tour maps for the towns of Columbus, Holly Springs, Natchez, and Vicksburg. Sponsored by the Mississippi Advertising Commission. Lincoln Highton as well as three images by Eudora Welty: GATHERING FOR A POLITICAL RALLY on page 9, SHANTYBOAT LIFE on page 16, and A ONE-MULE POWER CANE PRESS on page 449. Concluding appendix section features Chronology, Bibliography, and Index. A nice association copy to renowned Alabama storyteller and folklorist Kathryn Tucker Windham who would likely have utilized the this WPA guide for her 1974 book 13 MISSISSIPPI GHOSTS AND JEFFREY which was a popular follow-up to her 1969 classic 13 ALABAMA GHOSTS AND JEFFREY. As this guidebook was present in Windham's home it too must have witnessed Windham's resident specter Jeffrey but the book remains mute on this subject despite persistent questioning. Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Black cloth with gilt lettering on the spine. The boards have a very small bit of soiling. The end papers are mapped. The rear paste down has a slot for maps of the District of Columbia. One map is a very large map of the District of Columbia. The other map is a smaller one of the "thoroughfares" of the region. Both maps are list the Federal Writer's project on the map title. The corners are slightly curved with a small amount of fraying. Due to the map slot at the rear of the book, the text block does not sit straight in the book This lends the appearance that the book is cocked, but it really isn't.

Still an attractive copy for wartime rationing adversely affected the quality of the book's production particularly in regards to its thin paper dj which usually is not present at all - a very good+ copy in a good+ dust jacket. Compiled by Louisiana Writers' Project State Director Lyle Saxon, Assistant State Director Edward Dreyer, and Special Writer Robert Tallant from material gathered by the Louisiana Writers' Project of the Works Progress Administration, GUMBO YA-YA features drawings within the text by Caroline Durieux (misspelled as "Durifux" within the frontispiece, this being an additional first printing point) with additional decorations by Roland Duvernet plus: illustrated front endpapers (rear endpapers are blank); a Preface by Saxon, Dreyer, and Tallant; b/w photographs by various cited and uncited contributors; three appendices reviewing New Orleans superstitions, colloquialisms, and customs; and Index. The copyright page (page iv) notes the book's inclusion among "Louisiana Writers Project Publications" but, near the bottom of the page, appears the typographical error "Works Project Administration" (the book was among the last official publications under the auspices of the Work Projects Administration as its formal operations ended in 1943).
