'Beginning in March 1942 the United States government consigned 110,000 men, women, and children of J…apanese descent to what were in effect concentration camps. More than 10,000 of them ended up at Manzanar, a 'relocation centre' in a desolate area of California. In 1943 Ansel Adams went to Manzanar and took pictures of its inhabitants and the life they had managed to buld there. The pictures were donated to the Library of Congress where they remained unseen for 40 years. This book, with an original essay by John Hersey, brings these lost photographs back to light, and reopens a tragic episode in American history, while paying tribute to its casualties and its survivors.'
