Paperback. Etat : Very good. Paperback. 9 1/4" X 6 1/4". vi, 120pp. Rubbing, toning, and shelf wear to covers, corners, and edges of paper wraps. Lean to spine. Pages are clean and unmarked. Binding is firm and sound. ABOUT THIS BOOK: This book introduces and explores the role of apprehension in reasoning - setting out the problems, determining the vocabulary, fixing the boundaries, and questioning what is often taken for granted. Lynn Holt argues that a robust conception of rationality must include intellectual virtues which cannot be reduced to a set of rules for reasoners, and argues that the virtue of apprehension, an acquired disposition to see things correctly, is required if rationality is to be defensible. Drawing on an Aristotelian conception of intellectual virtue and examples from the sciences, Holt shows why impersonal standards for rationality are misguided, why foundations for knowledge are the last elements to emerge from inquiry not the first, and why intuition is a poor substitute for virtue. By placing the current scene in historical perspective, Holt displays the current impasse as the inevitable outcome of the replacement of intellectual virtue with method in the early modern philosophical imagination. Written in an engaging and jargon-free style, this book is of interest to a wide range of readers, particularly epistemologists and philosophers of science concerned with the fate of reason.(Publisher). 9 1/4" X 6 1/4". vi, 120pp. Rubbing, toning, and shelf wear to covers, corners, and edges of paper wraps. Hardcover. Etat : Very good. Etat de la jaquette : very good. First Edition. First Edition. Hardcover. 9 1/2" X 6 1/4". xxxii, 372pp. Very mild shelf wear to covers, corners, and edges of unclipped dust jacket. Bound in black paper over boards with spine lettered in gilt. Pages are clean and unmarked. Binding is firm and sound. ABOUT THIS BOOK: To reach the highest standards of instrumental performance, several years of sustained and focused learning are required. This requires perseverance, commitment and opportunities to learn and practise, often in a collective musical environment. This book brings together a wide range of enlightening current psychological and educational research to offer deeper insights into the mosaic of factors and related experiences that combine to nurture (and sometimes hinder) advanced musical performance. Each of the book's four sections focus on one aspect of music performance and learning: musics in higher education and beyond; musical journeys and educational reflections; performance learning; and developing expertise and professionalism. Although each chapter within its home section offers a particular focus, there is an underlying conception across all the book's contents of the achievability of advanced musical performance and of the important nurturing role that higher education can play, particularly if policy and practice are evidence-based and draw on the latest international research findings. The narrative offers an insight into the world of advanced musicians, detailing their learning journeys and the processes involved in their quest for the development of expertise and professionalism. It is the first book of its kind to consider performance learning in higher education across a variety of musical genres, including classical, jazz, popular and folk musics. The editors have invited an international community of leading scholars and performance practitioners to contribute to this publication, which draws on meticulous research and critical practice. This collection is an essential resource for all musicians, educators, researchers and policy makers who share our interest in promoting the development of advanced performance skills and professionalism .(Publisher). 9 1/2" X 6 1/4". xxxii, 372pp. Very mild shelf wear to covers, corners, and edges of unclipped dust jacket. Ajouter au panierForhan, Kate Langdon, 1949-. The political theory of Christine de Pizan. Aldershot, Hampshire, England ; Burlington, VT: Ashgate, 2002, 187pp., sewn PAPERBACK, attractive copy, appears unused. Christine de Pizan (1364-1429). Series: Women and gender in the early modern world - Review: "Few medieval or Renaissance political writers, male or female, wrote more works on politics than Christine de Pizan; none of them addressed audiences so varied in class or gender. Yet until now there has been no comprehensive full-length study of Christine de Pizan's political thought. With The Political Theory of Christine de Pizan, Kate Forhan rectifies this oversight, situating de Pizan in the history of political thought while discussing traditional concerns of political theorists, such as justice, obligation, law, equality, and just war. Forhan also addresses the question of whether Pizan's work is original or derivative: whether she is a theorist or 'merely' a political writer." "This book will be of interest to political theorists and political scientists: medieval historians: historians of women and gender: and scholars of comparative literature."-- CONTENTS: Descendants of Jean II, King of France -- 1. Alone am I -- 2. An Introduction to the Mirror for Princes -- 3. The Body Politic -- 4. On Kingship -- 5. Justice and the Law -- 6.
