In their wake, the quest for international order has prompted a reshuffling of global aims and priorities. In a fresh approach, Gilles Kepel focuses on the Middle East as a nexus of international disorder and decodes the complex language of war, propaganda, and terrorism that holds the region in its thrall. The breakdown of the Israeli Palestinian peace process in 2000 was the first turn in a downward spiral of violence and retribution. Meanwhile, a neoconservative revolution in Washington unsettled U.S. Mideast policy, which traditionally rested on the twin pillars of Israeli security and access to Gulf oil. In Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan, a transformation of the radical Islamist doctrine of Bin Laden and Zawahiri relocated the arena of terrorist action from Muslim lands to the West: Islamist radicals proclaimed jihad against their enemies worldwide. Kepel examines the impact of global terrorism and the ensuing military operations to stem its tide. He questions the United States' ability to address the Middle East challenge with Cold War rhetoric, while revealing the fault lines in terrorist ideology and tactics. Finally, he proposes a way out of the Middle East quagmire that triangulates the interests of Islamists, the West, and the Arab and Muslim ruling elites. That path leads through Muslim immigrant communities in the West~the ultimate battlefield where the struggle for the democratization of Islamic societies will be won or lost.

That Jefferson himself was caught between his own soaring rhetoric and private behavior toward blacks has long been known. But the tortured duality of his attitude toward Indians is only now being unearthed. In this landmark history, Anthony Wallace takes us on a tour of discovery to unexplored regions of Jefferson 's mind. There, the bookish Enlightenment scholar~collector of Indian vocabularies, excavator of ancient burial mounds, chronicler of the eloquence of America's native peoples, and mourner of their tragic fate~sits uncomfortably close to Jefferson the imperialist and architect of Indian removal, Impelled by the necessity of expanding his agrarian republic, he became adept at putting a philosophical gloss on his policy of encroachment, threats of war, and forced land cessions ~ a policy that led, eventually, to cultural genocide. In this compelling narrative, we see how Jefferson's close relationships with frontier fighters and Indian agents, land speculators and intrepid explorers, European travelers, missionary scholars, and the chiefs of many Indian nations all complicated his views of the rights and claims of the first Americans. Lavishly illustrated with scenes and portraits from the period, Jefferson and the Indians adds a troubled dimension to one of the most enigmatic figures of American history, and to one of its most shameful legacies.

K. Fairbank, "is the ticking time bomb in U.S.China policy." Now, before time runs out, Ralph N. Clough offers this masterly analysis of the Taiwan dilemma set against the background of the island's history, politics, and economic development. Clough begins by tracing the changing attitude of the United States toward Taiwan ~from disinterest after World War II to deep concern that began with the Korean War and continued until the peace in Vietnam. He then undertakes a thorough description of the island and its people. He discusses Taiwan's political strµcture, the strengths and weaknesses of its society, and the evolving relationship between native Taiwanese and the mainlanders who arrived after 1945. Clough fully examines the complex military situation and the unfinished civil war between the island and the mainland. He discusses, too, the war of diplomacy between the two Chinas, carrying his account into the 1970s and Taiwan's expulsion from the U .N. With insight and understanding, he describes Taiwan's fight for survival as an independent state and its effort to maintain commercial relations, particularly with Japan. The book concludes with a carefully reasoned analysis of Taiwan's role in U.S.~China relations. Clough's prognosis for the future is marred neither by a pessimist's despair over complexity nor by an optimist's blindness to unhappy facts. His book is a model of historical scholarship combined with the insights derived from practical experience and fieldwork. It will be invaluable to all students, scholars, legislators, and businessmen involved in the formulation of a U.S.~China policy.

The custodian of the tomb was so shaken by the incident that he willingly dedicated the rest of his life to protecting the president's corpse. In a lively and dramatic narrative, Thomas J. Craughwell returns to this bizarre, and largely forgotten, event with the first book to place the grave robbery in historical context. He takes us through the planning and execution of the crime and the outcome of the investigation. He describes the reactions of Mary Todd Lincoln and Robert Todd Lincoln to the theft~and the peculiar silence of a nation. He follows the unlikely tale of what happened to Lincoln's remains after the attempted robbery and details the plan devised by the Lincoln Guard of Honor to prevent a similar abominable occurrence. Along the way, Craughwell offers entertaining sidelights on the rise of counterfeiting in America and the establishment of the Secret Service to combat it: the prevalence of grave robberies: the art of nineteenth~century embalming: and the emergence among Irish imrnigrants of an ambitious middle class~and a criminal underclass. This rousing story of hapless con men, intrepid federal agents, and ordinary Springfield citizens who honored their native son by keeping a valuable, burdensome secret for decades offers a riveting glimpse into late nineteenth~century America and underscores that truth really is sometimes stranger than fiction.

The authors, Jerusalemites from the spheres of politics, journalism, and the military, have themselves been players in the drama that has unfolded in east Jerusalem in recent years and appears now to be at a climax. They have also had access to a wide range of official documents that reveal the making and implementation of Israeli policy toward Jerusalem. Their book discloses the details of Israel's discriminatory policies toward Jerusalem Arabs and shows how Israeli leaders mishandled everything from security and housing to schools and sanitation services, to the detriment of not only the Palestinian residents but also Israel's own agenda. Separate and Unequal is a history of lost opportunities to unite the peoples of Jerusalem. A central focus of the book is Teddy Kollek, the city's outspoken mayor for nearly three decades, whose failures have gone largely unreported until now. But Kollek is only one character in a cast that includes prime ministers, generals, terrorists, European and American leaders, Arab shopkeepers, Israeli policemen, and Palestinian schoolchildren. The story the authors tell is as dramatic and poignant as the mosaic of religious and ethnic groups that call Jerusalem home. And coming at a time of renewed crisis, it offers a startling perspective on past mistakes that can point the way toward more equitable treatment for all Jerusalemites. Amir S. Cheshin, a retired Israeli army colonel, was Senior Adviser on Arab Community Affairs and Assistant to former Jerusalem Mayor Teddy Kollek. Bill Hutman was a journalist with the Jerusalem Post. Avi Melamed was Deputy Adviser on Arab Affairs to Mayor Kollek and Adviser on Arab Affairs to Kollek's successor, Ehud Olmert.

Students of Chinese literature and cultural history will have much to learn from the work. . The editing is skillful, drawing out consistent lines of argument to provide even generalists with enough material to frame their own point of view." ~Frederic Wakeman, University of California, Berkeley. One of the most creative and brilliant episodes in modern Chinese history, the cultural and literary flowering that takes the name of the May Fourth Movement, is the subject of this comprehensive and insightful book. Moreover, this is the first study of modern Chinese literature that shows how China's Confucian traditions were combined with Western influences to create a literature of new values and consciousness for the Chinese people. The many distinguished and versatile scholars who have contributed essays to this book demonstrate how romanticism, realism, naturalism, and symbolism were used by young Chinese writers in their search for modernity and the political independence of their country. The luminous literary response that burst forth in the 1920s and 1930s is analyzed in discerning studies of the foreign impact on specific writers like Lu Xun, Mao Dun, Yu Dafu, and Ding Ling, and on the relationship of May Fourth culture to the communist literature that followed. The richly textured essays, full of illuminating judgments, depict these May Fourth cultural leaders as highly articulate and emotionally charged persons who both reflected reality and tried to change it. Their new subjects and literary modes prepared the way for the epochal event of the communist revolution.

Why is the "argument from design" so tenacious, and does Darwinism~itself still evolving after all these years~necessarily undo it? The definitive work on these contentious questions, Darwin and Design surveys the argument from design from its introduction by the Greeks, through the coming of Darwinism, down to the present day. In clear, non~technical language Michael Ruse, a well~known authority on the history and philosophy of Darwinism, offers a full and fair assessment of the status of the argument from design in light of both the advances of modern evolutionary biology and the thinking of today's philosophers~with special attention given to the supporters and critics of "intelligent design." The first comprehensive history and exposition of Western thought about design in the natural world, this important work suggests directions for our thinking as we move into the twenty~first century. A thoroughgoing guide to a perennially controversial issue, the book makes its own substantial contribution to the ongoing debate about the relationship between science and religion, and between evolution and its religious critics.

Yet, seemingly every week, feature stories describe genes that may be responsible for personality, intelligence, even happiness. In The Misunderstood Gene, Michel Morange points out that DNA and its genes are the centerpiece of modern biology primarily because they can be modified. But they are only the memory that life invented so that proteins can be efficiently reproduced. There is far more richness and meaning in the structure and interactions of proteins, he tells us, than in all the theoretical speculations on the role of genes. In this tour of recent findings in molecular biology, Professor Morange shows us how genes contribute to biological processes and complex human behavior~when they do. He makes it clear that we do not have to choose between rigid genetic determinism and fearful rejection of any specific role for genes in development or behavior. The Misunderstood Gene demystifies the power of modern genetics and refocuses biology on the many complex interactions that start with our genes, but do not necessarily end there. The sequencing of the human genome, now complete, is just the beginning of the story. This compact, accessible book will engage and enlighten all readers concerned about the promise and peril of genetic research.

At the war's end, the national government owed tremendous sums to foreign creditors and its own citizens. But lacking the power to tax, it had no means to repay them. The Founders and Finance is the first book to tell the story of how foreign~born financial specialists ~immigrants~ solved the fiscal crisis and set the United States on a path to long~term economic success. Pulitzer Prize~winning author Thomas K. Mccraw analyzes the skills and worldliness of Alexander Hamilton (from the Danish Virgin Islands), Albert Gallatin (from the Republic of Geneva), and other immigrant founders who guided the nation to prosperity. Their expertise with liquid capital far exceeded that of native~born plantation owners Washington, Jefferson, and Madison, who well understood the management of land and slaves but had only a vague knowledge of financial instruments, currencies, stocks, and bonds. The very rootlessness of America's immigrant leaders gave them a better understanding of money, credit, and banks, and the way each could be made to serve the public good. The remarkable financial innovations designed by Hamilton, Gallatin, and other immigrants enabled the United States to control its debts, to pay for the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, and ~barely ~ to fight the War of 1812, which preserved the nation's hard~won independence from Britain.

A distillation of more than fifty years' engagement with Japan and its history, it is the crowning work of our leading interpreter of the modern Japanese experience. Since 1600 Japan has undergone three periods of wrenching social and institutional change, following the imposition of hegemonic order on feudal society by the Tokugawa shogun; the opening of Japan's ports by Commodore Perry; and defeat in World War II. The Making of Modern Japan charts these changes: the social engineering begun with the founding of the shogunate in 1600, the emergence of village and castle towns with consumer populations, and the diffusion of samurai values in the culture. Jansen covers the making of the modern state, the adaptation of Western models, growing international trade, the broadening opportunity in Japanese society with industrialization, and the postwar occupation reforms imposed by General MacArthur. Throughout, the book gives voice to the individuals and views that have shaped the actions and beliefs of the Japanese, with writers, artists, and thinkers as well as political leaders given their due. The story this book tells, though marked by profound changes, is also one of remarkable consistency, in which continuities outweigh upheavals in the development of society, and successive waves of outside influence have only served to strengthen a sense of what is unique and native to Japanese experience. The Making of Modern Japan takes us to the core of this experience as it illuminates one of the contemporary world's most compelling transformations.

In a country founded on the principle of religious freedom, with no medieval past, no legal nobility, and no national church, how did anti~Semitism become a presence here? And how have America's beginnings and history affected the course of this bigotry? Frederic Cople Jaher considers these questions in A Scapegoat in the New Wilderness, the first history of American anti~Semitism from its origins in the ancient world to its first widespread outbreak during the Civil War. Comprehensive in approach, the book combines psychological, sociological, economic, cultural, anthropological, and historical interpretation to reveal the nature of anti~Semitism in the United States. Jaher sets up a comparative framework, in which American anti~Semitism is seen in relation to other forms of ethnic and religious bigotry He compares America's treatment of Jews to their treatment in other eras and countries, and notes variations by region, social group, and historical period. Jaher shows us that although anti~Semitism has been less pronounced in America than in Europe, it has had a significant place in our culture from the beginning, a circumstance he traces to intertwining religious and secular forces reaching back to early Christianity, with its doctrinal animosity toward Jews. He documents the growth of this animosity in its American incarnation through the 1830s to its virulent and epidemic climax during the Civil War. Though Christianity's dispute with Judaism accounts for the persistence of anti~Semitism, Jaher reveals the deeper roots of this pathology of prejudice in the human psyche ~ in primal concerns about defeat, enfeeblement, and death, or in visceral responses of intergroup and interpersonal envy and rivalry. An in~depth study of all phases of anti~Jewish feeling as it is manifested in politics, economic behavior, cultural myth and legend, religious and social interaction, and the performing arts, this uniquely comprehensive work offers rare insight into the New World's oldest ethnic and religious hatred.

To avoid the imprecision and metrical monotony of earlier verse translations, Magoun has used prose, printed line for line as in the original so that repetitions, parallelisms, and variations are readily apparent. The lyrical passages and poetic images, the wry humor, the tall~tale extravagance, and the homely realism of the Kalevala come through with extraordinary effectiveness. "This authoritative new translation of the Kalevala, together with the materials the volume contains relating the poetic style of the Finnish songs to the style of other orally composed poetry, is especially significant to students of European folklore. Both Professor Magoun and the Harvard University Press have placed many generations of folklorists in their debt." ~ Journal of American Folklore. "For English students of theKalevala, unless they have a good working knowledge of both Swedish and Finnish, this is an indispensable book." ~Folklore.

Mourners, mute and reverent, trooped through the silent Moscow streets in the January cold to stand in line outside his bier. The year was 1924 and, as Nina Tumarkin shows, the process by which the founder of Bolshevism was subtly transformed into a demigod had been underway for some time. His idealization as a cult figure had been developing throughout the civil war, furnishing the Communist Party with a powerful legitimizing symbol. The stability of the new state required some such central image, and Tumarkin traces the piecemeal development of organized political veneration through Lenin's long illness and immediately after his death. With the leader gone, the regime that ruled Russia in his name sought to sustain the emotions of solidarity unleashed by his death. So the cult was formed, celebrating Lenin's living power through his writings, his portraits, and his body, embalmed and displayed in the hastily built Lenin Mausoleum. The growth of the Lenin cult was in part spontaneous, with roots in peasant culture, Orthodox ritual, and the peculiar history of the Russian revolutionary intelligentsia. But Tumarkin forcefully demonstrates that the cult was, to an even greater degree, a planned operation designed to create a secular religion through which the masses might more easily be won over. Until now, the mystical and ritualistic aspects of Communist Party politics have been underemphasized in works dealing with early Soviet history. Lenin Lives! demonstrates the galvanizing power of ritual in the establishment of a post~revolutionary regime. This book is enhanced by striking illustrations.

Lincoln was, more than any other president in the nation's history, a "lawyerly" president, the veteran of thousands of courtroom battles, where victories were won, not by raw strength or superior numbers, but by appeals to reason, citations of precedent, and invocations of justice. He brought his nearly twenty~five years of experience as a practicing lawyer to bear on his presidential duties to nominate Supreme Court justices, preside over a major reorganization of the federal court system, and respond to Supreme Court decisions~some of which gravely threatened the Union cause. The Civil War was, on one level, a struggle between competing visions of constitutional law, represented on the one side by Lincoln's insistence that the United States was a permanent Union of one people united by a "supreme law," and on the other by Jefferson Davis's argument that the United States was a compact of sovereign states whose legal ties could be dissolved at any time and for any reason, subject only to the judgment of the dissolving states that the cause for dissolution was sufficient. Alternately opposed and supported by the justices of the Supreme Court, Lincoln steered the war~torn nation on a sometimes uncertain, but ultimately triumphant, path to victory, saving the Union, freeing the slaves, and preserving the Constitution for future generations.

Its endurance~approximately eight hundred years~is all the more remarkable because it was favored neither by geography nor by military preponderance. Edward Luttwak argues that it so greatly out lasted its western counterpart because its rulers were able to adapt strategically to diminished circumstances by devising new ways of coping with successive enemies. The Byzantine empire relied less on military strength and more on persuasion~to recruit allies, dissuade threatening neighbors, and manipulate potential enemies into attacking one another. Even when the Byzantines fought~which they often did with skill they were less inclined to destroy their enemies than to contain them, for they knew that today's enemies could be tomorrow's allies. Born when the formidable threat of Attila's Huns was lightly deflected toward Rome, Byzantine strategy continued to be refined over the centuries, incidentally leaving for us several in structive guidebooks to statecraft and war. The Grand Strategy of the Byzantine Empire is a history of Byzantine strategy, intelligence, and diplomacy over the course of eight centuries. It will appeal to scholars, soldiers, classicists, and readers of military history.
