Hardback. Etat : Good. Joan of Arc: Her Image in France and America celebrates the cultural legacy of a medieval French heroine who led the armies of her nation to victory against the English, who was tried on charges of heresy, and who was burned at the stake in Rouen in 1431. Two decades after her death, her trial was reopened and the court reversed the verdict. But it was not until the pinnacle of her popularity, nearly 500 years later, that the Catholic Church canonized her. Born in Domremy, France, around 1412, Saint Joan endures as one of the most famous people of the Middle Ages, and her extraordinary life has engaged generations of historians, writers, artists and-most recently-Hollywood film producers, many of whom have used her image to stir an astonishing array of passions. This highly illustrated book, published on the occasion of a major exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, is the first to explore the history of Joan's image both in France and the United States. For several centuries representations of Joan have reflected the historical contexts in which they were created, and have been used to promote a huge variety of political, cultural and religious views. These range from icons of martial ascendancy and nationalist unity to paragons of humble piety and maidenly purity, supporting both the power of the people, and the divine right of kings. AUTHOR: Nora M. Heimann is associate professor, Department of Art at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and guest curator, European Paintings at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. She is a leading art historian and teacher of art theory, and previous publications include Joan of Arc in French Art and Culture: From Medieval Maiden to Modern Icon (2004), and Inheritors of a Legacy: Charles Lang Freer and the Washington vant-Garde(1999). Laura Coyle, formerly curator of European Art at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. is an independent scholar. 70 colour illustrations.

Hardback. Etat : Fair. Encompasses an impressive and engaging variety of fabulous objects from the most important faience centres, dating from the late sixteenth to the mid-eighteenth century. A feat of great technical achievement, French faience was introduced to Lyon in the second half of the sixteenth century by skilled Italian immigrants:mdash;the French word "faience" deriving from the northern Italian city of Faenza. Over the next two centuries, production spread throughout the provinces of metropolitan France. The fine decoration of French faience draws inspiration from multiple sources - Italian maiolica, Asian porcelain, and even contemporary engravings. The forms of its platters, bowls, plates, and ewers derive mostly from European ceramics and silver. This complex interplay of influences comes together in works of great originality. The Knafel Collection of French faience, the finest in private hands, includes outstanding examples of Nevers, Rouen, Moustiers, Moulins, and Marseilles production from the late sixteenth to the mid-eighteenth century. The quality of these masterpieces almost obscures the fact that French faience was essentially a provincial art, largely patronised and commissioned by a local aristocracy and made far from the centres of political power in Versailles and Paris. In this stunning new volume, Charlotte Vignon traces the history of French faience, offering detailed discussions of key centers of production. Illustrated with more than seventy examples, this valuable resource testifies to the creativity and beauty of an engagingly innovative tradition. AUTHOR: Charlotte Vignon is curator of Decorative Arts at The Frick Collection, as well as a Visiting Associate Professor at the Bard Graduate Center, New York. 88 colour images.

Rembrandt took an unusual and dramatic approach to biblical subjects, exploring the nature of divine encounter and the complexities of its representation, making use of the viewer's knowledge of the subject whilst finding ways to bring the familiar to life. Hardback. Etat : Good. The Cleveland table fountain, dated c. 132040, is the only version of its kind to have survived in its complete form from the Middle Ages. A superb example of French Gothic goldsmithing, it is an exquisite structure and a unique example of courtly taste and princely fashion. In its full working glory, it was designed not for any religious purpose, but purely as an indulgence; the delicate bells would have created a gentle tinkling sound as the perfumed water trickled down into the basin beneath. Acquired by the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1924, the uncertain history of the fountain has added to its charm, and many questions remain worthy of re-examination. Stephen N. Fliegel assesses the fountain in the context of similar luxury objects, discussing its history, use, materials and style. Elina Gertsman elucidates the significance of fountains in the medieval imagination. Once one of many, the Cleveland table fountain is the last of its kind; a fantastic piece of craftsmanship designed to appeal to all the senses. AUTHOR: Stephen N. Fliegel is curator of medieval art at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Elina Gertsman is associate professor, Department of Art History and Art, Case Western Reserve University. SELLING POINTS: . Focuses on one of the most remarkable examples of gothic art to have survived, a unique functioning table decoration. . Will appeal to academics, students, and museum professionals interested in medieval decorative arts, especially goldsmith works and enamels, and automata.

Paperback. Etat : Good. The brand new and exquisitely illustrated book introduces the general public to one of the great collections of jewelry, with examples of major objects dating from the 1st century BC to the turn of the twentieth century. The volume presents 50 key items of jewelry, each illustrated in colour, many with colour details. Each object is accompanied by an extended caption, including information on date, maker where known and region. Specific terminology, when used, is always explained; each text clearly states why a particular object is important. The jewelry selected shows an enormous range of periods, regions, artistic and stylist development, and materials. Signature items featured in this volume include a magnificent pair of gold bracelets encrusted with precious stones and multicolour enamel inlay discovered inside a tomb in Olbia, Ukraine, and dating to the Hellenistic Period of the 1st-century BC; a pair of gold and semi-precious stone-inlaid eagle fibulae, dating from 6th-century Visigothic Spain; a cameo and gold-mounted brooch depicting Ellen Walters, made in Italy by the Saulini family around 1862; a gold Iris Corsage ornament by Tiffany and Co., decorated with sapphires, garnets, topaz and diamonds, first displayed in Paris in 1900; and a wonderful corsage ornament of pansy blossoms executed in a combination of cast glass and plique-a-jour enamel by Rene Lalique, dating from 1904. The latter piece is especially significant because it marks one of the first instances of Lalique's use of cast glass, and anticipates his decision in 1909 to renounce jewelry production and turn exclusively to glass manufacturing. Particular emphasis is placed on the style, beauty and craftsmanship of the selected items; each is discussed both in itself and within the context of the wider regional makers and period. A Glossary provides information on terms, makers and regions. AUTHOR: Sabine Albersmeier is Assistant Curator for Ancient Art at the Walters Art Museum, where she is responsible for the Greek and Roman collection. Prior to her arrival at the Walters, Dr. Albersmeier was project leader for the Badisches Landesmuseum, Germany in cooperation with the Zentrum fur Kunst und Medienkultur Karlsruhe. Between 1999 and 2001, she was a research curator at the Badisches Landesmuseum, where she was involved in the preparation of exhibitions, including The Myth of Tutankhamun (2001), which she curated. Hardback. Etat : Very Good. Aristotle towers over Western philosophy and science as no other single person does. As they have come down to us, Aristotle's works comprise a veritable encyclopedia of philosophy and logic, the physical and natural sciences, ethics and politics. Aristotle's astonishing range and depth made him indisputably the most important intellectual figure in the Western tradition before the modern age. Although he has been studied continuously for more than two-thousand years, his individual works were dispersed, lost, recovered, and very gradually reunited. The physical transmission of the Aristotelian corpus was a long, complicated, uncoordinated process - not one chain of transmission but many. From the Roman Empire, through the mediation of Arab and Jewish scholars, to the western Middle Ages and scholasticism and up to the cusp of modernity in the late 15th century, Aristotle's works were copied and recopied by scribes in Greek, Arabic, Hebrew, and Latin before finally becoming available again in their original Greek. The volume illustrates the ways in which the Aristotelian corpus has been transmitted over time. In particular, it focuses on one crucial, extended moment: the moment when, thanks to the invention of printing, Aristotle's works became widely available in Latin, Greek, and even in vernacular languages in the late 15th and 16th centuries. At that moment, Aristotle's authority comes under increasing scrutiny as the new science and philosophy of early modern Europe chart different courses for the future. However, Aristotle is not only an obstacle to be overcome, he also serves as a bridge to the new age especially in the work of Jesuit philosophers and scientists. One way or the other, Aristotle had to be dealt with. He could not be avoided. The extraordinary books and manuscripts in this volume, selected from the collection of the Martin J. Gross Foundation, demonstrate just how intellectuals of the time received and wrestled with Aristotle. Through commentaries, treatises, lecture courses in schools, and above all in the written marginalia of books, the volume reveals the extent of the age's engagement with Aristotle. Many of these books and manuscripts have never before been studied, so this is an important invitation to reassess the impact and influence of Aristotle at a point in time when much contemporary scholarship chooses to ignore him.
