Hardback. Etat : Good. Joan of Arc: Her Image in France and America celebrates the cultural legacy of a medieval French heroine who led the armies of her nation to victory against the English, who was tried on charges of heresy, and who was burned at the stake in Rouen in 1431. Two decades after her death, her trial was reopened and the court reversed the verdict. But it was not until the pinnacle of her popularity, nearly 500 years later, that the Catholic Church canonized her. Born in Domremy, France, around 1412, Saint Joan endures as one of the most famous people of the Middle Ages, and her extraordinary life has engaged generations of historians, writers, artists and-most recently-Hollywood film producers, many of whom have used her image to stir an astonishing array of passions. This highly illustrated book, published on the occasion of a major exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, is the first to explore the history of Joan's image both in France and the United States. For several centuries representations of Joan have reflected the historical contexts in which they were created, and have been used to promote a huge variety of political, cultural and religious views. These range from icons of martial ascendancy and nationalist unity to paragons of humble piety and maidenly purity, supporting both the power of the people, and the divine right of kings. AUTHOR: Nora M. Heimann is associate professor, Department of Art at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and guest curator, European Paintings at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. She is a leading art historian and teacher of art theory, and previous publications include Joan of Arc in French Art and Culture: From Medieval Maiden to Modern Icon (2004), and Inheritors of a Legacy: Charles Lang Freer and the Washington vant-Garde(1999). Laura Coyle, formerly curator of European Art at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. is an independent scholar. 70 colour illustrations.

Hardback. Etat : Very Good. Explores Rembrandt's unique approach to depicting the nature of divine encounter and the complexities of its representation. Rembrandt took an unusual and dramatic approach to biblical subjects, exploring the nature of divine encounter and the complexities of its representation, making use of the viewer's knowledge of the subject whilst finding ways to bring the familiar to life. Discussions about what we see as opposed to what we know were prevalent in the religious, artistic, scientific, and philosophical thinking of the period. It was left to artists to portray divine encounter in pictorial form. This new, scholarly volume brings together 10 works by Rembrandt which portray biblical episodes, examining these works as a group and considering them in context. AUTHOR: Joanna Sheers Seidenstein is the 201517 Anne L. Poulet Curatorial Fellow at The Frick Collection, New York. She is a doctoral candidate at New York University's Institute of Fine Arts, where she is writing a dissertation on Rembrandt's treatments of themes from classical antiquity. SELLING POINTS: . Features a rarely exhibited painting by Rembrandt van Rijn alongside other religious works by the artist and his contemporaries . Helps readers understand what Rembrandt's influences and intentions were in the context of the theological and artistic debates of the 17th-century 31 colour images.

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. One of the gems of the Freer/Sackler Gallery is the impressive collection of 19th- and 20th-century photographs of scenes and figures from Asia and the Middle East. This remarkable archive is continually being augmented with still and moving graphics, film and video works by leading modern and contemporary Asian and Middle Eastern artists, photographers and film-makers. Among the many treasures of the collection is a group of 44 extremely rare photo-negative portraits of the Qing Empress Dowager of China, Cixi (18351908), taken by Xunling, the son of her senior lady-in-waiting. 'Painting with Light' features photography from the museum's remarkable collections, revealing how the medium has shaped views of Asia from the mid-19th century to the present day. Included are portraits of the famous and the anonymous, urban and rural landscape views, posed studio images and candid shots, and photos documenting research in the field. Each photograph is accompanied by a brief description of its art historical significance or little-known aspects of its history. This is the first volume in a new series of books and apps to be published by GILES in association with the Freer|Sackler Gallery. AUTHOR: David Hogge is head of Archives, Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian Institution. Carol Huh is assistant curator of Contemporary Asian Art, Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian Institution 200 colour photos.
