Electromagnetism began in the nineteenth century when Faraday showed electricity and magnetism were not distinct, separate phenomena, but interacted when there were time-varying electric or magnetic fields. In Electricity and Magnetism I have shown from first principles how Faraday's experiments led finally to Maxwell's four equations, which with the electromagnetic-force law summarise the whole of classical electromagnetism. This book therefore begins with Maxwell's equations and then uses them to study the propagation and generation of electromagnetic waves. Physics is a subject in which the more advanced the treatment of a topic, the deeper the understanding of common occurrences that is revealed. In studying the solutions of Maxwell's equations you will find answers to such questions as: What is an electro magnetic wave? Why does a radio wave travel through space at the speed of light? How is a radio wave generated? Why does light pass through a straight tunnel when a radio wave does not? How does light travel down a curved glass fibre? It is a remarkable fact that the classical laws of electromagnetism are fully consistent with Einstein's special theory of relativity and this is discussed in Chapter 2. The following four chapters provide solutions of Maxwell's equations for the propagation of electro magnetic waves in free space, in dielectrics, across interfaces and in conductors respectively. Rutley's elements of mineralogy has been around for a long time, certainly throughout my own lifetime; and if my great grandfather had read geology, it would have been prescribed reading for him too! It has been rewritten and revised frequently since fir~t conceived by Frank Rutley in the late 19th century. Major revisions occurred in 1902, and then in 1914, when H. H. Read first took over the authorship, and thereafter in 1936 and in 1965 when the last major changes occurred. It was with some trepidation that I agreed to attempt this revision. I had been asked to do it by Janet Watson in 1979, but various commitments delayed my start on it until 1984. This 27th edition encompasses a number of changes. Chapters 1-5 have the same headings as before, but considerable changes have been made in all of them, particularly 1, 3, 4 and 5. Comments sought prior to the revision revealed considerable disagreement about the role of blowpipe analyses in the book. I have only once had blowpipe analyses demon strated to me, and have never used them; but there is no doubt that they are employed in many countries, and many of the tests (flame colour, bead, etc. ) are still useful as rapid indicators of which element is present in a mineral. I have therefore kept blowpipe analysis information in Rutley, but have relegated it to an appendix. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Ian Kenyon, who was involved in the UA1 experiment at CERN that searched for the particles, provides an introduction to particle physics and takes a refreshingly non-historical approach. The aim of the book has been to concentrate on the 'standard model' and the gauge symmetries because these form the core of the subject. Leptons, quarks and forces are introduced at the beginning. After this introduction the gauge theories are dealt with in order of increasing complexity. Attention is then focussed on the hadrons - deep inelastic scattering of hadrons, then hadron spectroscopy and finally hadron interactions. Current developments beyond the standard model appear in the last chapter. This book should be of interest to third year undergraduate students; postgraduates in particle physics, nuclear physics; researchers in nuclear physics. Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. 'Proceedings of the 9th conference, Washington D.C., 10-14 June 1985.' The book is in very nice condition. As you can see from the photos, the covers are clean. There is some toning on the spine, and a little bit of the same on the rear cover, just adjacent to the spine. The black and blue lettering on the front and spine is very bright. There are small creases at a few of the corners. The one at the rear top corner created a very light crease at the corner of some of the latter pages, though only other rear side, not much of anything. Getting back to the covers, there's little bit of rubbing at the bottom of the spine (second photo). The edges are free of rubbing with the exception of the bottom edge of the spine. The corners have just a little bit of light rubbing. The spine has a slight forward lean, but the book is solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout. The covers are also nicely tight. The pages are exceptionally clean. That includes the white inside covers and end papers. Scrolling through the pages, I'm not finding any instances of soiling. I saw two corners that had been turned down, so there is a crease on each, and a few of the pages before and after each of these have a very vague impression of these creases. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind (NOT ex-library). And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. There are a great many illustrations, photographs, charts, tables, drawings. They all appear to be in excellent condition.

For example, satellites are now routinely used in remote sensing of the ocean surface and hydrothermal vents at sea floor spreading centres have been extensively researched. The second edition has been considerably expanded and reorganised, and many new figures and tables have been included. Every chapter has been carefully updated and many have been rewritten. A new chapter on man's use of the oceans has been included to cover satellites and position fixing, renewable energy sources in the sea, seabed minerals, oil and gas, pollution and maritime law. In this edition we have also referred to a number of original references and review articles so that readers can find their way into the literature more easily. As in the first edition, PSM has been mainly responsible for the text and lIC for the illustrations, although each has responded to advice from the other and also from many colleagues.
