Oriented according to the movements of the Celtic sun god, the map had been forgotten for almost two millennia. Its implications were astonishing. Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : As New. Etat de la jaquette : As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 290 pages. Published in 2013. The author's sixth and final novel. One of James Salter's finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents James Salter's "All That Is". His first novel in 35 years, and his last. Published at the age of 87, Salter's novel is about writing itself. He is speaking for himself (and other writers) when his protagonist, Philip Bowman, who closely resembles him, particularly his youthful military and subsequent literary selves, muses: "The power of the novel in the nation's culture had weakened. It happened gradually. It was something everyone recognized and ignored. All went on exactly as before, that was the beauty of it. The glory had faded, but fresh faces kept appearing, wanting to be part of it, to be in publishing, which had retained a suggestion of elegance like a pair of beautiful, bone-shined shoes owned by a bankrupt man" (James Salter). "Here, as always, this writer so at war with the obvious uncovers radiance even in the most melancholy circumstance, applying to it the same rigor he uses to scrutinize and dismiss any easy, conventional notions about heroism or the honorable life" (The New York Times). Even in contemporary culture, writing = telling stories. Storytelling is something a writer does best, and genius-writers do it better than anyone else. But entertainers and other artists are storytellers too, and are often very good at it. As a storyteller, the writer is diminished in our celebrity culture to the point of insignificance. But what the writer will always represent at any moment of any national culture, a heroic, transcendent solitude, is irreplaceable. The fashionable celebrities of our time - the Hollywood star, the Silicon Valley "genius", and their ilk - cannot even begin to approach the summit that the writer reaches simply by putting pen to paper, a privilege and an honor that James Salter reminds us of in his valedictory novel. That's all that matters in the end, all that is. James Salter died on June 19, 2015. An absolute "must-have" title for James Salter collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by James Salter. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of very few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing (British) still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available have serious flaws, are in multiple subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. One of the greatest writers of our time. A fine collectible copy. ISBN 1447238249. Signed by Author.

Ajouter au panierFirst edition. Very fine in decorated dust jacket. From his first published story in the Paris Review in 1968, James Salter's stories have been universally acclaimed. Including his two published collections, Dusk and Other Stories (1988) and Last Night (2005), and the previously uncollected 'Charisma', this volume contains over twenty short stories by one of the finest writers of our time. Concerning men and women in their most intimate moments, struggling with loss, desire, or the burden of memory, each indelible narrative in the Collected Stories is marked by James Salter's great literary grace, his ability to show the subtleties of a character or situation with precision, and his equally assured ability to command reversals of fortune or shocking revelations. 'It's the short stories which make him one of the greatest writers of the last century and the present one' Financial Times 'Writing that is bowstring-taut and carries considerable punch' Sunday Times 'Salter's stories are masterpieces of poise and clarity, so much so that their dazzling surface stillness often blinds you to the surprisingly bold risks." There is no comparable American edition of this superb collection.

Ajouter au panierLimited Edition. Octavo. A special limited edition of which 50 copies have been quarter-bound in Harmatan fine blue leather with letterpress printed sides designed by Andrew Stilwell and Patrick Roe and produced by The Fine Book Bindery, Finedon, Northants. The present copy is number 32. The basic theme seems to be that of sex and transience. The vast majority of the characters we meet are either divorced or separated or, are going to be (as was Salter himself). There is a fairly large cast, a large number of marital/relationship breakdowns. What is both interesting and sad is that many of them rush into these relationships with great enthusiasm and often great passion. They seem, in many cases, to feel that their partner is the one fairly early on, often only after a day or two, and then the passion and enthusiasm gradually dwindle, till the next one comes along. A fine bright copy housed within publisher's lined slipcase.
