"The aim of this book is to serve as an introduction to the history of Europe between the middle of the thirteenth century and the early part of the sixteenth. I hope to persuade my readers that this is an interesting period, and I have quoted a good deal from contemporary writings, because men's ipsissima verba are surely bound to be more striking and more convincing than the 'secondary' conclusions drawn from them. I have also assumed in my readers diverse intellectual temperaments. Those who are not attracted by past politics may find more interest in past economics, or in religion or art or the history of ideas, and quite substantial sections of the book are devoted to each of these topics. Yet politics remain the staple diet of the historian, and I have taken as my principal subject the growth of the power of the State and the manner in which this is reflected in ideas concerning politics. In treating a series of diverse themes I have tried to keep this main thesis in view. Thus, while the book begins and ends with contrasting chapters on the State and men's notions about it in the thirteenth century and the early sixteenth century, the chapter on the early Renaissance touches on the intensification of civic spirit, while, of the two chapters primarily concerned with religion, the former emphasizes the patriotic element in the Hussite movement and the latter the decisive religious consequences of Germans s uncharacteristic political disintegration." - from the introduction. Original blue cloth, impressed crown and anchor device within decorative borders on each board, joints cracked and holding by the cords, one plate coming loose and nicked at the fore-edge margin, an ink spill along the lower edge of the book-block just affecting the lower margins of the first and last few text leaves, but mostly affecting the lower inner corners of the plates, especially those at the end of the book where the ink has corroded some of the paper [without loss of image], withal offered as a good working copy. *First issued in 1857, both editions are very scarce. A third edition was published in 1864. It is a vast and fascinating encyclopaedia of necessary knowledge, and includes a section on the steam engine in addition to the expected chapters on sails and sailing ships. The Appendix begins with an astonishing list of what a cadet required for his Improved Iron-Bound Sea chest, including 36 shirts with Linen Fronts, 4 Table Cloths 4 yards each, a bath and one set of silver spoons and forks [ 'spoons and forks must be silver, not plated, and are more easily identified by initials than by crests. The rising extravagant habits which threatened to supplant the old-fashioned frugality and manly indifference to epicurism, have been so promptly checked by the Authorities, that it is needless to do more than quote their Circular on the subject.']. She was decommissioned in 1843, before returning to service for the Crimean War, serving as flagship of Admiral Sir James Deans Dundas, commanding the British fleet in the Mediterranean and Black Sea from 1851-4. She returned to England at the beginning of 1855 and that year became a hospital ship at Portsmouth, then a cadet training ship in 1859. She was moved to Portland in 1862, then Dartmouth in 1863, where she served as residential barracks for cadets.'.…

The first edition was published in 1816 based on Koster's extensive travels in the area. His narrative is considered one of the most accurate and useful of all the travel accounts written on the area. Boraba de Moraes 437 (referring to this second edition of 1817): 'a classic work on the North of Brazil. . . greatly esteemed by all. . . In the appendix he transcribes two monographs by Arruda Camara, rare today, which appeared in Rio in 1810'. This appendix is on plants found in Brazil and their uses. The work includes chapters on the native peoples, planters, animals, agriculture, society, festivals, slavery, etc, based on the authors extensive travels. The maps are of the port of Pernambuco and of northern Brazil where the author travelled. A very attractive set. A picture of this book is available on request.…

The third volume is entitled 'Topographical Dictionary of the Province of Lower Canada'. The plates include lithographs, aquatints, engraved plates and are finely done, mostly being views and scenery, including of Montreal, Fredericton, Quebec City, Fort Chambly, Isle aux Noix, Long's Farm on Lake Jimiscouata, Harrower's Distillery, the falls of the St. John, plans of York Harbour, the Niagara River and others. The author was survey general for 37 years and traveled widely in the area. Abbey, Travel 622. Lande 1594-5. Sabin 6848-51. TPL 1627-28. This is a greatly expanded version of the author's Topographical Description of 1815.
