Trade Paperback. Etat : Used - Very Good. 'Settlement Patterns' Founded in the early 1950s, Perspecta is the oldest and most distinguished of the student-edited American architectural journals that have appeared in recent decades. Perspecta 30 examines settlement patterns in twentieth-century America. The term 'settlement,' so c…ritical to the ideology of the country's founding, is used to consider land use, development, and housing in a broad context. The essays address infrastructure, planned communities, zoning, and financing--all critical determinants of how the United States has come to be settled, with implications for the future. The contributors view housing not as an isolated architectural event but as a pervasive societal preoccupation of enormous impact. The issue includes original documentation of notable housing projects from the 1920s and 1930s, when modernist ideas promised to revamp architecture and when, in retrospect, many of the seeds for post-World War II suburban sprawl were planted. These housing schemes, now viewed as isolated social experiments, suggest alternative settlement patterns that might have developed.Perspecta 30 features articles by some of the country's leading architectural theorists, critics, educators, and practitioners. Among the contributors are Ed Bacon, Denise Scott Brown, Margaret Crawford, Mike Davis, Keller Easterling, Steve Kieran, Fred Koetter, Alex Maclean, Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, Alan Plattus, Ron Shiffman, and Neil Smith. The issue includes original documentation of notable housing projects from the 1920s and 1930s, when modernist ideas promised torevamp architecture and when, in retrospect, many of the seeds forpost-World War II suburban sprawl were planted. Very nice clean, tight copy free of any marks.

Hardcover. Etat : Used - Very Good. Since the 1970s Rosalind Krauss has been exploring the art of painters, sculptors, and photographers, examining the intersection of these artists concerns with the major currents of postwar visual culture: the question of the commodity, the status of the subject, issues of representation and a…bstraction, and the viability of individual media. These essays on nine women artists--gathered as Bachelors--are framed by the question, born of feminism, 'What evaluative criteria can be applied to women's art?' In the case of surrealism, in particular, some have claimed that surrealist women artists must either redraw the lines of their practice or participate in the movement's misogyny. Krauss resists that claim, for these 'bachelors' are artists whose expressive strategies challenge the very ideals of unity and mastery identified with masculinist aesthetics. Some of this work, such as the 'part object' (Louise Bourgeois) or the 'formless' (Cindy Sherman) could be said to find its power in strategies associated with such concepts as ecriture feminine. In the work of Agnes Martin, Eva Hesse, or Sherrie Levine, one can make the case that the power of the work can be revealed only by recourse to another type of logic altogether. Bachelors attempts to do justice to these and other artists (Claude Cahun, Dora Maar, Louise Lawler, Francesca Woodman) in the terms their works demand. Essays on nine women 'bachelors' who challenged masculine aesthetics. 97 halftones. Very nice clean, tight copy free of any marks. No DJ.

Trade Paperback. Etat : Used - Good. A civic place belongs to everyone and yet to nobody in particular. In Civic Realism, Peter G. Rowe looks at the shape and appearance of civic places, and at the social, political, and cultural circumstances that bring them into existence. The book is as much about the making and reshaping of…civic places as it is about urban architecture per se. According to Rowe, the best civic place-making occurs across the divide between the state and civil society. Topics covered in the book include the role of the state and civil society in the construction of civic spaces, aesthetic and architectural dimensions of realism, individual and collective uses of urban space, and how civic places constitute as well as represent the civic aspects of our lives. The examples, mostly from the modern period, include recent public spaces in Barcelona, several of the Grand Projects in Paris, neorealist projects in postwar Rome, contemporary transformations of the Manhattan grid, and Plecnik's water axis in prewar Ljubljana. A study of the shape and appearance of civic places and the social, political, and cultural circumstances that bring them into existence. Book has minor shelf wear. Book has dust particles on it.

Trade Paperback. Etat : Used - Very Good. Pietro Belluschi (1899-1994) was the last of a generation of architectsthat included Marcel Breuer, Jose Luis Sert, and Louis I. Kahn, European immigrantswho had a major impact on American architecture. This first extensively illustratedstudy of his life and work brings to light a remark…ably accomplished architect, recipient of the AIA Gold Medal and designer (by his own estimate) of well over1,000 buildings and projects. It reveals the enormous power that Belluschi wieldedas an arbiter of taste and decision maker in the 1950s and 1960s; his role inshaping the policy of the State Department in its overseas building program; and hisrole in securing major commissions for favored architects such as I. M. Pei. Equallyimportant is Meredith Clausen's discussion of Belluschi's role in the development ofregionalism in the Pacific Northwest, and its impact on the definition of modernismas it was emerging in the United States.Clausen examines all aspects of Belluschi'slong and productive career from his classical origins in Rome and the arts andcrafts influences in the Pacific Northwest that helped shape his aesthetic, to therestrained, modernist houses and churches that comprised his early work; individualbuildings like the startlingly modern Portland Art Museum of 1931 and the aluminum-clad Equitable (now Commonwealth) Building of 1948 that were at the cutting edge ofprogressive architecture; and the stores, shopping centers, and flush-surfaced glassand metal corporate towers that were the bread and butter of Belluschi's practice.Inthis measured account, Clausen describes the collaboration with Walter Gropius onthe massive Pan Am Building that, dogged by unpopular public sentiment, marked adownturn in Belluschi's career and the fortunes of modernism in general. By aligninghimself with large-scale institutions and private developers, Clausen observes, Belluschi alienated both avant-garde theorists and aesthetic trend setters and wasincreasingly at odds with the temper of the times, a fall from grace that culminatedin a well- publicized debate with Philip Johnson in the late 1970s over MichaelGraves's design for the Public Services Building in Portland, Oregon. Very nice clean, tight copy free of any marks.
