Trade Paperback. Etat : Used. The Grand Tour was once the culmination of an architect's education. As ajourney to the cultural sites of Europe, the Tour's agenda was clearly defined: tostudy ancient monuments in order to reproduce them at home. Architects returned fromtheir Grand Tours with rolls of measured drawings and less tangible spoils: patronage, commissions, and cultural cachet. Although no longer carried out underthe same name, the practices inscribed by the Grand Tour have continued relevancefor contemporary architects. This edition of Perspecta--the oldest and mostdistinguished student-edited architectural journal in America--uses the Grand Tour, broadly conceived, as a model for understanding the history, current incarnation, and future of architectural travel. Perspecta 41 asks: where do we go, how do werecord what we see, what do we bring back, and how does it change us? Contributionsinclude explorations of architects' travels in times of war; Peter Eisenman'saccount of his career-defining 1962 trip with Colin Rowe around Europe in aVolkswagen; Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown's discussion of their travelingand its effect on their collecting, teaching, and design work; drawings documentingthe monolithic churches of Lalibela, Ethiopia; an account of how James Gamble Rogersdesigned Yale's Sterling Library and residential colleges using his collection ofpostcards; and a proposed itinerary for a contemporary Grand Tour--inAmerica.ContributorsEsra Akcan, Aaron Betsky, Ljiljana Blagojevic [acute accent overc], Edward Burtynsky, Matthew Coolidge and CLUI, Gillian Darley, Brook Denison, Helen Dorey, Keller Easterling, Peter Eisenman, Dan Graham and Mark Wasiuta, JefferyInaba and C-Lab, Sam Jacob, Michael Meredith, Colin Montgomery, Dietrich Neumann, Enrique Ramirez, Mary-Ann Ray and Robert Mangurian, Kazys Varnelis, Robert Venturiand Denise Scott Brown, Enrique Walker Architectural travel, from the Eternal City to the generic city. sun damaged, wear, spine whitening, edges dirty.

Trade Paperback. Etat : Used - Good. The story of the Adam Joseph Lewis Center at Oberlin College--the first substantially green building to be built on a college campus--encompasses more than the particulars of one building. In Design on the Edge, David Orr writes about the planning and design of Oberlin's environmental studies building as part of a larger story about the art and science of ecological design and the ability of institutions of higher learning themselves to learn. The Lewis Center, which has attracted worldwide attention as a model of ecological design, operates according to environmental principles. It is powered entirely by solar energy, features landscaping with fruit trees and vegetable gardens, and houses a Living Machine, which processes all wastewater for reuse in the building or landscape. Orr puts the Lewis Center into historical design context and describes the obstacles and successes he encountered in obtaining funds and college approval, interweaving the particulars of the center with thoughts on the larger environmental and societal issues the building process illustrates.Equal parts analysis, personal reflection, and call to action, Design on the Edge illustrates the process of institutional change, institutional learning, and the political economy of design. It describes how the idea of the Lewis Center originated and was translated into reality with the help of such environmental visionaries as William McDonough and John Todd, and how the building has performed since its completion.College and university administrators will spend 17 billion dollars on new buildings over the next few years. Design on the Edge is essential reading for architects, planners, and environmentalists who need to sell the innovations of ecological design to wary institutions, and for educators and students whose profession is undermined by the very buildings they work in--and for anyone who has ever tried to change an organization for the better. The story of the building of the Adam Joseph Lewis Center at Oberlin College in the context of ecological design, institutional learning, and the green campus movement.

Trade Paperback. Etat : Used - Very Good. Artifacts (including works of architecture) play dual roles; theysimultaneously perform functions and carry meaning. Columns support roofs, but whilethe sturdy Tuscan and Doric types traditionally signify masculinity, the slim andelegant Ionic and Corinthian kinds read as feminine. Words are often inscribed onobjects. (On a door: 'push' or 'pull.') Today, information isdigitally encoded (dematerialized) and displayed (rematerialized) to become part ofmany different objects, at one moment appearing on a laptop screen and at another, perhaps, on a building facade (as in Times Square). Well-designed artifacts succeedin being both useful and meaningful. In World's Greatest Architect, William Mitchelloffers a series of snapshots--short essays and analyses--that examine the systems offunction and meaning currently operating in our buildings, cities, and globalnetworks. In his writing, Mitchell makes connections that aren't necessarily obviousbut are always illuminating, moving in one essay from Bush-Cheney's abuse oflanguage to Robert Venturi's argument against rigid ideology and in favor ofgraceful pragmatism. He traces the evolution of Las Vegas from Sin/Sign City tofamily-friendly resort and residential real estate boomtown. A purchase of chipsleads not only to a complementary purchase of beer but to thoughts of Eames chairs(like Pringles) and Gehry (fun to imitate with tortilla chips in refried beans). Asfor who the world's greatest architect might be, here's a hint: he's also theoldest. Function and meaning in architecture and elsewhere, from tongue-in-cheek instructions for creating a surveillance state to reflections on the architecture of the potato chip.

Trade Paperback. Etat : Used - Very Good. In An American Lens, Jay Bochner looks at a series of milestones in thedevelopment of the American avant-garde that capture a pivotal period in artisticconsciousness. He focuses on the multiple roles of Alfred Stieglitz -- asinfluential gallery owner, photographer, and impresario of the emerging art scene --at a series of significant moments in his career. These close-ups offer a moreintense and expanded understanding of the subject than the familiar longview.Bochner uses these scenes to recreate for today's readers the birth ofmodernism in America--what it was like to be an audience for the art of the earlyavant-garde. Moving from frame to frame, he shows us, for example, a singlephotograph by Stieglitz of a snowy night in 1893 and a short description by StephenCrane of just such a snowfall; the preparation, the reception, and the aftermath ofthe famous Armory Show of modern art in 1913; Gertrude Stein's portraits in prose;New York at the dawn of Dada, with Paul Strand, Francis Picabia, and others; and theintersecting paths of Mina Loy, William Carlos Williams, and Marcel Duchamp in 1917.Bochner also examines Stieglitz's three great photographic series: his photographsof Georgia O'Keeffe, of clouds, and of skyscrapers. These sections of the bookinclude many Stieglitz photos, including some rarely seen portraits ofO'Keeffe.Stieglitz as impresario and artist achieved an almost mythical status, which some recent critics have worked to deflate -- casting him, for example, asSvengali to Georgia O'Keeffe's spellbound Trilby. Engaging in neither idolatry nordemolition, Bochner looks instead for the truth about the man and the myth. Thescenes from American art in An American Lens create a new version of Stieglitz'sbiography, allowing us to reread his life and the life of his times by focusingintently on what is visible and not so visible in the art he left behind. A close reading of photography yields a groundbreaking cultural biography; reveals photography's impresario, Alfred Stieglitz, as he has never been revealed before and looks at his photographs as they have never been looked at before. Slight scratching/scuffing on cover. Book has minor shelf wear.

Hardcover. Etat : New. The typewriter, the card index, and the filing cabinet: these aretechnologies and modalities of the archive. To the bureaucrat, archives containlittle more than garbage, paperwork no longer needed; to the historian, on the otherhand, the archive's content stands as a quasi-objective correlative of the'living' past. Twentieth-century art made use of the archive in a varietyof ways--from what Spieker calls Marcel Duchamp's 'anemic archive' ofreadymades and El Lissitzky's Demonstration Rooms to the compilations of photographsmade by such postwar artists as Susan Hiller and Gerhard Richter. In The BigArchive, Sven Spieker investigates the archive--as both bureaucratic institution andindex of evolving attitudes toward contingent time in science and art--and finds itto be a crucible of twentieth-century modernism. Dadaists, constructivists, andSurrealists favored discontinuous, nonlinear archives that resisted hermeneuticreading and ordered presentation. Spieker argues that the use of archives by suchcontemporary artists as Hiller, Richter, Hans-Peter Feldmann, Walid Raad, and BorisMikhailov responds to and continues this attack on the nineteenth-century archiveand its objectification of the historical process. Spieker considers archivallydriven art in relation to changing media technologies--the typewriter, thetelephone, the telegraph, film. And he connects the archive to a particularly modernvisuality, showing that the avant-garde used the archive as something of alaboratory for experimental inquiries into the nature of vision and its relation totime. The Big Archive offers us the first critical monograph on an overarching motifin twentieth-century art. The archive as a crucible of twentieth-century modernism and key for understanding contemporary art. BEAUTIFUL COPY!!.

Hardcover. Etat : New. America is becoming a container landscape of big boxes connected byhighways. When a big box store upsizes to an even bigger box 'supercenter'down the road, it leaves behind more than the vacant shell of a retail operation; itleaves behind a changed landscape that can't be changed back. Acres of land havebeen paved around it. Highway traffic comes to it; local roads end at it. Withthousands of empty big box stores spread across America, these vistas have become adominant feature of the American landscape. In Big Box Reuse, Julia Christensenshows us how ten communities have addressed this problem, turning vacated Wal-Martsand Kmarts into something else: a church, a library, a school, a medical center, acourthouse, a recreation center, a museum, or other more civic-minded structures. Ineach case, what was once a shopping destination becomes a center of community life.Christensen crisscrossed America identifying these projects, then photographed, videotaped, and interviewed the people involved. The first-person accounts and colorphotographs of Big Box Reuse reveal the hidden stories behind the transformation ofthese facades into gateways of community life. Whether a big box store becomes a'Senior Resource Center' or a museum devoted to Spam (the kind that comesin a can), each renovation displays a community's resourcefulness andcreativity--but also raises questions about how big box buildings affect the livesof communities. What does it mean for us and for the future of America if the spacesof commerce built by a few monolithic corporations become the sites where education, medicine, religion, and culture are dispensed wholesale to the populace? What happens to the landscape, to community, and to the population when vacated big box stores are turned into community centers, churches, schools, and libraries.
