The last section is a Catalogue of Fruits containing the names of many which are no longer available. See: James Gabler, Wine into Words, page 315; H. Ajouter au panier8vo. (16.5 x 10 cm). pp.[xxv]+240 ; x+42+[xii]. Contemporary calf binding re-backed to style, renewed new endpapers. Five engraved copper plates, four of which displaying various instruments used in the production of cider and one of an apiary, plus one marginal illustration of a siphon. Ownership inscription of Ric[hard] Orme d…ated to 1688 on frontis verso and title. Boards rubbed and edges repaired, very light and intermittent foxing, contents clean and unmarked, generally a very appealing copy. This is the enlarged second impression of John Worlidge's Vinetum Britannicum and the first edition to be conjoined with the Apiarium, his discourse on beekeeping. In the Vinetum, Worlidge embarks to explain in clear terms how best to grow apples and other fruits and also the most efficient and effective methods of harvesting them and fermenting them into cider. For Worlidge, cider and its relatives are the finest drinks England have to offer and he yearns for a society occupied in the production and consumption of this 'most excellent liquor'.

Ajouter au panier8vo, pp. [xvi], 344, 336-351; (text continuous despite pagination errors); title page in red and black; lacking the half title but otherwise a sound copy in 19th century calf, rubbed, lacking one label, but otherwise sound. First and only edition. This is a very late work by the poet, critic and hack writer Charles Gildon (he di…ed in January 1724): at the time it was published, he was blind and virtually penniless, but was relieved by a present of money from the dedicatee the Duchess of Buckingham. Her husband, the politician John Sheffield, had died in February 1721, and she would have been flattered by the analysis that Gildon gave to his poem - whilst reprinting large sections of it, as well as parts of Roscommon and Lansdowne. There are two issues of this book, with no precedence; the other has the name of the bookseller J. Morley in the imprint.
