Hardback. Etat : Good. Lucas Samaras was one of the great avant-garde artists of the last few decades. Renowned both for his use of fabrics and for his deployment of everyday objects in his installations, he was perhaps best known for his work in photography, where he frequently took himself as a subject. This lavishly illustrated volume is the authoritative biography of a consummate self-portraitist and a riveting depiction of a paradoxical personality: of an artist whose work in the 1960s and '70s prefigured the vindicated narcissism of the selfie era, but who also showed every sign of being a quiet and agoraphobic maverick at war with the mindset of calculated sociability. From his sensitive evocation of Samaras's childhood in wartime Greece through to his perceptive interpretation of the artist's career in the United States, Michael Skafidas has produced an outstanding account of his subject's life and work. It is also an intriguing record of his own relationship with Samaras, and a powerful meditation on the art of life-writing.…

Hardcover. Etat : VG/VG. Pink cloth boards with gilt lettering on front cover and spine, color illustrated dust jacket, vi, 164 pp, richly illustrated in color. "In the book, a wide range of kilim types from diverse regions of Turkey is illustrated and discussed. Also included is a selection of bags and cushions, the beauty and refinement of which is often overlooked. The authors attempt to relate the weavings to the various groups who made them and, in doing so, to examine the origins of the Turkic and Kurdish elements of the population. The nomadic lifestyle, an essential part of everyone's past, also comes under scrutiny." "Drawing on their years of experience in collecting and restoration, the authors have provided an accurate account of the various weaving techniques, and have clarified some methods which are often wrongly described. Separate sections are devoted to the importance of textiles in the history of mankind, the materials, and the sources of the dyes used to obtain the glorious colours of the past. The authors have avoided making fanciful speculations, seen in some recent publications, about the origins of design elements."--BOOK JACKET.…

First Edition. This work is devoted to the very few women who, from 1750 to the present, have assembled significant art collections. The authors consider how and why these women collected, and explore the obstacles they overcame to assemble the objects. The book closely examines the characteristics of their collections, many of which can be seen today, sometimes in their entirety, in public museums and galleries. In the introduction the authors provide a general survey of the different collecting fields that appeal especially to women, including jewellery, fans, lace and textiles. It also looks at women who venture into new areas, collecting items such as fossils, insects and theatre memorabilia. In each case a leading pioneer is cited with a brief look at the nature of her collection. They observe how, with the shift from the eclectic mix of works of art and curiosities of nature collected in the 18th century to the focus on antiques in the 19th century, women were - whether by design or otherwise - collecting the possessions of their predecessors. The chapters look in detail at 30 great women collectors, each prominent in their fields. Rather than presenting these women individually, they are grouped together according to common themes such as "royal consorts" or "20th century creators of museums"; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 208 pages; Physical desc. : 208 p. : ill. (some col. ) , photos, ports ; 28 cm. Includes bibliographical references (p. 201-205) and index. Subject: Art - Art objects - Collectors and collecting.
