Paperback. Etat : New. The contributions collected in this volume are linked by a common thread: the development of Africa is a problem that must be faced and solved by the peoples of the continent, with the aim of consolidating democracy and guaranteeing a future of growth and progressive improvement in the quality of life. However, Europe has a role and a responsibility in this process: after having imposed on Africa the model of the bureaucratic and centralized national state, Europe today can represent a model of integration, on the economic field and, in perspective, on the political terrain. Beyond this, Europe must offer a partnership with the African Union to start a Green New Deal for Europe and Africa together, with the allocation of financial resources, but also technology transfers and infrastructure creation. But in this partnership for growth the initiative must be entrusted to African countries, as was the case for Europe in the case of the Marshall Plan. Europe must impose as a sole condition that their plan be drawn up in common and placed in the perspective of strengthening the process of economic and political integration already started on the Continent.…

Paperback. Etat : New. Museums are increasingly developing international strategies to raise their profiles outside of their home markets. How can we define this trend? This book is based on a multiple correspondence analysis of a database populated by the results of a survey conducted by the author on international museums. The study reveals that museums fall into four categories regarding their internationalization strategies and can have two complementary international strategies: one geared toward economic profitability and one geared toward the preservation of heritage. However, traditional business models for museums are currently facing challenges from a decline in public subsidies, uncertainty surrounding private donations and stagnant ticket sales. The author argues that the internationalization of museums is having an impact on the historical models and is contributing to the evolution of these business models. Two case studies, of the Victoria and Albert Museum (London, UK) and the Musée des Arts et Métiers (Paris, France), provide particular insights into the international characteristics and practices of museums.…

Paperback. Etat : New. How do we think and imagine cultural and art institutions nowadays? How they need to be transformed to meet the needs of the artists and professionals in the field? This book examines the theoretical and practical tensions and questions related to cultural and art institutions in the context of North Macedonia and the wider region of former Yugoslavia. The author explores the needs in the art field of contemporary performing arts (post-dramatic theatre, dance, performance, choreography, etc.) and offers approaches to modelling and governing contemporary performing art institutions from the perspective of the independent cultural and art sector. The book proposes a post-modern cultural and art institution, or a co-institution, based on co-curation and shared leadership as opposed to the traditional or standard model of institution of arts and culture. The author offers an activist, self-organized and horizontal approach to governing, instead of vertical or top-bottom, and modelling based on shared policies and a participative approach, instead of authoritarian partocratic policy-making."Innovative and challenging analysis of the changing realities of the institutional cultural system. Conceptually sophisticated, compelling and with imaginative and ethically relevant solutions, this book is the timely response to the crucial issues in cultural management and cultural policy."- Milena Dragicevic Sesic, prof. emerita, University of Arts Belgrade.…

Paperback. Etat : New. This publication puts forward a revised vision in an attempt to solve one of the most serious problems facing schools, that of their inability to involve all pupils in learning. Beyond being a simple vision, it is also a plea for an in-depth transformation of educational practices. The contributions in this book call for a different look at problems and practices in the fight against school failure. The chapters in this book present the challenges faced by education and training professionals in France, Spain, Hungary and Denmark. The texts question and highlight the idea of cooperation between families, schools, communities and local authorities. How can we develop relevant and effective professional practices to combat pupils' learning difficulties? In guidance and future orientation, how can we consider pupils' diversity and the often difficult social and economic context in which they live? How can we link school and out-of-school knowledge to better promote the development of pupils' learning? How can national or even international educational guidelines be linked to local initiatives.…

Paperback. Etat : New. In the last decades urban and heritage paradigms have shifted greatly. Heritage preservation and urban development are no longer considered as contradictory. Legitimate definitions of cultural heritage have widened as heritagisation processes expanded and exposed the socially constructed and dynamic nature of heritage, far from the monumentalist and object-centred approach which used to prevail. What does this imply for cities which have become global players ever increasing in size, flux, power and complexity? How can heritage and development be mutually reinforcing? How can policies and practices of heritage be fruitfully integrated as a resource into wider urban change while respecting environmental, social and cultural concerns? This volume analyses ways in which heritage recognition, conservation, valorisation and promotion have been integrated in urban planning and policies. It benefits from the cross-fertilization of specialists and practitioners in political, urban and area studies, cultural policy, sociology, anthropology, urban planning and architecture, who use a variety of methodologies to explore cities as living entities. The book examines the disputed influence of international frameworks, notably from UNESCO, and takes a holistic approach to cultural policies encompassing both theory and application, listed and unlisted sites, East and West. Case studies from Chile, China, Cuba, Ecuador, England, France and Peru allow to grasp both the diversity of situations and the converging policy and management practices. This volume's global perspective on urban issues will be of interest to urban planners, cultural policy and heritage specialists, social and human sciences researchers and students.…

Paperback. Etat : New. Conceived by Wagner as a way to recover the synthesis of arts at the core of Greek tragedy, the Gesamtkunstwerk played a significant role in post-Romantic and avant-garde aesthetics. It was designed to regenerate and defend the public function of art against mass culture and technology, yet at the same time depended on them in an ambivalent relationship manifested by its various realizations. The book reconceives the "total work of art" as a variation of intermediality, a practice that subverts any essentialist vision of artistic languages through complex interplay and blending of perceptions, amplified by new media and the syncretic nature of the cyberspace. The Gesamtkunstwerk can no longer be considered a Hegelian synthesis of arts or a Romantic and Wagnerian fusion of languages: it involves a synergy of different arts and media and captures the digital age's principle of open textuality without any hierarchy and any organicist connotations. This book reveals the vitality of modern and contemporary Gesamtkunstwerk by mapping its presence in various arts and media.…

Paperback. Etat : New. Archives brought from Egypt to southern France in the early 19th?century fell into the hands of a secret group whose own archives were confiscated by Occupation authorities during World War II. In 1942 some of these confiscated documents were appropriated by a young Frenchman who struggled over the following decades to decipher the importance of what he had stolen. By 1980 his rambling texts had become a prime source for the authors of?Holy Blood, Holy Grail?(and ultimately for?The Da Vinci Code), which concluded, amid much controversy, that the early kings of France were descendants of Jesus and Mary Magdalene.Yet these source-texts?have little, if anything, to say about Jesus and certainly nothing of his purported family. They do, however, hint at the survival of a unique, original, and inherently legitimate line of sacred kings from deep pre-Biblical times when, as set out in the Sumerian King List, "Kingship was lowered from Heaven".An Extra Player on the Playing Field of History examines the framework of Kingship and the origin of legitimate rule from their beginnings in Mesopotamia into Old and New Testament times, and from the Merovingian kings of France into later underground traditions. Their legacy is the story of an inherently Royal bloodline, of the Grail, and of its dedicated Keepers.…

Paperback. Etat : New. This book offers a general approach to the importance of nutrition and public health policies in the process of modernisation of Japan during the interwar years. It describes the origins of scientific and technical modernisation during the Edo, Meiji, and Taisho periods, including the demographic and epidemiologic background, and the birth of a public health administration parallel to the strengthening and expansion of the Japanese empire. Special attention is given to the cultural significance of rice for the Japanese population, and its close relation to disease and nutritional deficiencies, especially beriberi. The second part of the book is devoted to the prominent figure of Tadasu Saiki (1876-1959), founding father of Japanese nutritional science, and his initiative in creating the Imperial State Institute for Nutrition (ISIN) in Tokyo. The new institution boosted national policies and a wide international diplomacy generating great expectations in Japan and abroad. The international impact of Japanese nutritional research and dietary policies is also analysed. The book ends with an analysis of the negative consequences of the Second World War, a critical breakdown in health and nutrition among the Japanese population. …

Paperback. Etat : New. This book is the outcome of a multi-annual study of Chinese and European research institutions that addresses the partnership between the EU and China and its political and economic implications. The book's distinct focus is to situate this multipurpose relationship within the context of the multidisciplinary academic debate about China's interregional relations with specific regions (i.e. Europe, Southeast Asia, Latin America, Africa, Middle East), notably the Belt and Road initiative (BRI). Both the economic and political dimensions of the international rise of China are critically analysed, with special attention to opportunities, risks, challenges and controversial issues. The international set of authors uniquely combines academics and decision makers as well as experts and think tank leaders. The collection includes contributions by Mario Telò, Sun Jisheng, Lin Hongyu, Zhao Jiakun, Wei Ling, Uwe Wissenbach, Feng Yuan, Jean-François Di Meglio, Shi Shiwei, Jürgen Rüland, Fabricio Rodríguez, Sebastian Santander, Wang Jin, Guy Burton, Geoffrey Harris, Jia Ruixia, Zhang Min and Gerald Stahl. Paperback. Etat : New. Albert Einstein was one of the initiators of the peace movement in Europe in the early twentieth century. He tirelessly denounced the imperfections of society due to the primitive institution of war and devoted his energies to outlawing war. After Hitler's rise to power, he abandoned pacifism and instead embraced a federalist vision?according to which the root cause of war lies in the division of the world into sovereign states and the vehicle of peace is world government. This book explores Einstein's outlook on war and peace and traces the evolution of his thinking on these topics. In particular, Einstein developed a dialogue on war and peace with physicists like Bohr, Planck and Szilard as well intellectuals like Dewey, Freud, Gandhi, Mann, Mumford, Rolland Russell, Schweitzer and Tagore. The key concepts that were the focus of these discussions were the cause of war (included the Einstein-Freud debate on?psychological?and political causes of war) and the means to prevent it; the distinction between antimilitarism, pacifism, internationalism and federalism; and the dividing line between intergovernmental and supranational organizations.…

Paperback. Etat : New. This book presents a new method for measuring the effectivity of national and international environmental law. It took four years of research and experimentation to develop a way to construct evidence-based legal indicators. The existing environmental indicators evaluate only statistical, scientific or economic data. With legal indicators, governments, parliaments and other public and private actors, including environmental NGOs, will be able to assess accurately and concretely, on a scientific basis, what the gaps, progress and setbacks in the implementation of international conventions and national laws are. The legal indicators will also serve as innovative tools for decision-making, in particular to carry out legislative reforms in full knowledge of the facts and not blindly, as well as to avoid regressions in environmental law.The mathematical method used makes it possible, through a questi onnaire addressing all the legal and institutional stages of the application of legal texts, to provide data highlighting both the points to be improved and the strengths of the application of the law. This essay is an update of a first book published in 2018 by the Institut de la Francophonie pour le développement durable. It is the result of a partnership between the International Centre for Comparative Environmental Law and the Normandy Chair for Peace.…

Paperback. Etat : New. Does Norway belong to Western Europe? This provocative question, put to the head of the Norwegian delegation to the conference on the reconstruction of Europe after World War II, begins the history of Norwegian attitudes towards European integration. From 1905 to 1994, Norway opposed practically all types of European and international cooperation. Had Norway's views gained traction, Europe and the world would look very different today. Towards Europe demonstrates how little Norwegians knew before the 1994 referendum about the EU Single Market and the European Economic Area (EEA). The book takes the reader behind the scenes of secret negotiations between the EU and Norway, giving an unprecedented insight into how the EEA works in practice. It illustrates with concrete examples Norway's ability to articulate its views and to be heard in Brussels, from the perspective of both government and interest groups. It also looks at Norway's potential to tackle future EU challenges such as the Energy Union, migration policies, transatlantic trade and the Banking Union.Towards Europe will provide the reader with pertinent insights into whether the EEA is a suitable alternative for Britain's future relations with the EU.This edition includes an extra chapter on how to influence the EU from a non-member country.…

Paperback. Etat : New. The internationalisation of higher education has accelerated in recent years. Internationalisation at most higher education institutions mainly takes the form of study abroad. This immersion in an intercultural environment is believed to foster the development of academic and non-academic skills, thus improving graduates' employability. Regardless of the geographical area, higher education institutions (HEI) have therefor put student mobility at the heart of their academic projects. However, the context has changed: the Covid-19 health crisis has led to a freezing of international mobility. Alternative solutions to traditional mobility must be found. With this book, we intend to contribute to reflections on how to develop intercultural sensitivity and intercultural competences among students through Internationalisation at Home. For this purpose, in the eight chapters of the book, we present some pedagogical methods that facilitate the creation of a context conducive to interculturality and the acquisition of plural skills by students at home. Some authors examine how these competences can be assessed. Finally, we propose a framework explaining how a combination of activities within an institution can foster the development of students' intercultural competences. Regardless of the approaches chosen by the teachers observed, they answered similar questions. These questions set a framework for reflections on efficient approaches to supporting the development of students' intercultural skills in an Internationalisation at Home context.…

Hardback. Etat : New. The L2 speaker is able to function in the target culture only when s/he is able to understand, anticipate and produce the choices that the said society makes. Being polite therefore means: knowing how to draw on the conventions of a society, taking into account the expectations of?an interlocutor regarding social relations at any given point, and is based on the appropriate language register?to the communication situation; being able to balance standard and non-standard features and to adjust one's speech by moving it towards more or less familiarity, or formality. The learner therefore needs to be aware of the pragmatic flexibility of speakers - native and experts - who move from one register to another and juggle between respect and caution, first degree meaning and irony, exuberance and excess, with difference in levels, nature and degrees of politeness.?This volume contains contributions whose theoretical reflections, field work experiences and authentic data from diverse African, Asian and European languages, literatures and cultures as well as a variety of corpora shed new light on politeness as a central phenomenon in pragmatics, and on what is at stake when teaching or learning the subject. It also opens up a conceptual dialogue with a whole range of domains likely to enrich the debate: sociolinguistics, literature, translation studies, semiotics, cultural anthropology, social psychology, etc.…

Paperback. Etat : New. Almost sixty years after the signature of the Treaty of Rome in 1957 creating the European Community), a Member-State, the United Kingdom, has for the first time in history decided to leave the European Union. The "yes" to leave vote during the British referendum on 26 June 2016 led to the use of Article 50 of the EU Treaty triggering off a long period of negotiations between the UK and the EU, which was overshadowed by a permanent struggle between the options of a "deal" or a "no-deal". The Withdrawal Agreement was finally signed on 24 January 2020 and Brexit actually took place on 31 January 2020 - more than three and a half years after the referendum. It is not surprising that a lot of analyses have been put forward to explain the British electoral result, mainly from the perspective of political sociology. However, there has been less research so far on the deeper roots of Brexit as a historical and political process and its development from the start of the referendum campaign until the end of the negotiations between the UK and the EU, nor on its possible social, economic, legal and (geo)political consequences. In order to examine the origins and consequences of Brexit, this publication develops two original perspectives. On the one hand, it has taken a pluridisciplinary approach comparing the point of views of sociologists, political scientists, legal experts and historians. On the other hand, it has adopted a global approach by comparing the analyses of Japanese, Canadian, American and European researchers. These "Global Views on Brexit" regroup the contributions to an international Conference on "The Consequences of Brexit" organised on 6-7 December 2018 in Strasbourg, in the framework of the Jean Monnet project on Crises in European Border Regions supported by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union (EU) for the period from 2018-2020.…

Paperback. Etat : New. Wine as a product arises from human connections in know-how and trade as much as from the natural environment in which grapes are grown. At each stage of decision-making about growing grapes, making wine, selling and drinking it, people with different roles are networked together into systems of production and distribution. The authors in this collection offer new studies of the individuals and groups who act as connectors in these networked systems, intermediating in the delivery of wine from growers' vines to consumers' glasses. These actors operate at multi-layered scales of geography or within multiple regimes of governance, all the while taking account of arbitrations of quality and taste. This collection highlights how intermediators in many different wine countries and periods of history are, and have been, significant agents of continuity and change in the wine industry.…

Paperback. Etat : New. Why an intercultural glossary today? How does interculturalism deal with the cultural shifts led by the resurgence of populism in Europe leading towards increasingly close-minded and selfish attitudes? Are the social sciences helpful in the implementation of an intercultural approach? How to teach students the fundamentals of interculturalism? Over the last years, the fierce populisms raising around Europe has been a strong enemy of interculturalism which grow weaker in front of the simplest solutions provided by intolerance and racism. Social sciences provide strong concepts to be grounded in social policy, urban administration, education, and interreligious dialogue. Drawing from sociology, psychology, history, philosophy, education, human geography, and international law, the book offers a list of 18 «middle-range concepts»- as social integration, migration governance, cultural identity, participation, citizenship, reflexivity, resilience - and «thematic issues», like overcoming racism, revitalising urban periphery, and human rights enforcement. Each entry includes elements of reflection for the development of practices and projects coping with major societal challenges in the extra-academic areas. The book, written by a multi-national pool of European academic lectures, is meant to facilitate all actors committed to the building of a more inclusive society.…

Paperback. Etat : New. In 1961, Martin Esslin named a body of plays that lacked plot, character depth, and details of time and space the "Theatre of the Absurd". Esslin explained that this type of theatre, minimalist in the extreme, constituted a response to the existential crisis of Europe, which was in the midst of recovering from World War II. But the fact that this body of theatre lacked details of time and space means that we may break the ties that anchor the Theatre of the Absurd irremediably to the historical context of post-World War II Europe. How can the Theatre of the Absurd speak meaningfully to us in the twenty-first century? This book explores this question by combining the avant-garde that Martin Esslin named in 1961 in his signature work The Theatre of the Absurd with gender studies, queer theory, and psychoanalysis, and avant-garde studies. The Theatre of the Absurd is capable of subverting post-millennial institutions and ideologies, including the Prison Industrial Complex and the West's domination of the Islamic world in a post-9/11 era.…

This book is the result of research carried out in partnership with sevenEuropean universities as part of an Erasmus+ project on training teachersof Language for Specifi c Purpose (LSP) in higher education. All universitypartners, i.e. Bordeaux (France), Zagreb (Croatia), Jade (Germany), Cádiz(Spain), Adam Mickiewicz (Poland), Ljubljana (Slovenia), Arcola Research(UK), and Bergamo (Italy) carried out surveys and developed a detailedreport showing that in Europe there is very little training for this type ofteaching, and that teachers generally need to be trained in the specifi citiesof the language fi eld they are going to teach. Medical or maritime English, legal Spanish, French for tourism, etc. require both an expert domainknowledge and a grounding in language teaching. Several testimonieshighlight this situation and show the lack of career development prospectsfor LSP teachers at European universities. The members of the Erasmus+ TRAILs project have therefore beeninterested in the specifi c needs of LSP teachers and have been able toupdate the information through several types of surveys. The competencesof LSP teachers were thus identifi ed. Based on this precise inventory, theyare proposing to draw up a complete training programme.A pedagogical approach has been developed: resources, lesson preparation, course design, innovative pedagogical approaches are presented. Theresearch presented in this book goes well beyond the TRAILs project andquestions the training of specialised language teachers. More generally,it highlights the need to provide effective training and professionaldevelopment for LSP teachers and offers a contribution to overcoming theshortcomings of LSP teacher education. …

From a variety of disciplinary perspectives (discourse analysis, communication studies, linguistics, rhetoric, semiotics, business and management studies), the contributors explore the production and interpretation of texts and interactions from an ethical perspective, as well as the use (and abuse) of communicative strategies and tactics of persuasion.
