Because horning was a relatively simple craft, requiring simple working tools, and as stated above, more strength than ingenuity, it was considered to be one of the lower class trades. Horners made such things as combs, flasks, snuff mulls and boxes, caddies. mirror backs, and so. Within the book trade, horn was the support medium for handled tablets holding paper or vellum sheets of the alphabet for teaching children to read, still known today as 'horn books'.…
