Full-Leather. Etat : Good. Second. Brown leather boards have a decorative gilt line along the margins, 10% of which has rubbed away. Spine, with five raised bands has lost its label and most of the gilt decoration; loss around head 5 mm in depth; front hinge of spine rubbed and split 3 mm at top and 3 mm at base, holding firm ne…vertheless. Internally a few splodges to endpapers; one, 1 cm in diameter seeping through to the next two (blank) pages. Half-title with ads on the reverse, title page completely clean (save for contemporaneous signature), dedication page, 2 page introduction, 4 page dedication, xliv (preface), 212 (starting with County of Bedford) + 30 pp Appendix (unpaginated). Gutter between rear endpapers partly exposed but holding firm. Pages clean and crisp Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Binding heavily worn with the rear joint partially split, some l…oss at the spine base, and the front cover attached by the cords only, modest worming affecting the pastedowns, endleaves, and the first 100 or so pages, most engravings foxed (one with a small foredge chip) and a few leaves toward the end with light staining at the foredges, a good only copy.

New end-papers. Ownership inscription - "Abel Hicks, his book--"dated 1742. A fair amount of foxing/soiling mostly towards the page edges. The l…ast few pages are torn, with a little loss, at the top edge. Pp.viii,285 + "a list of all the head ports, member ports, creeks etc in England and Wales, shewing all the lawful keys, wharfs etc ---with their proper uses and dsimensions"; Forms of Proceedings in Customs matters; "The opinions of council in particular doubtful cases"; an index; and "A table of all the Acts which have any relation to the Customs." All these latter parts are unpaginated. The main part of the book is an abridgment of the Acts relating to Customs. There is also an Introduction. The book is intended to contain everything the Customs Officer of 1742 needed to know when carrying out his duties. A scarce work and a fascinating piece of history.

[4]ff, xl, 183, [1] pp; [3]ff, xii, 558, 10 pp. Bound in contemporary black goatskin, the volumes bound in a similar style but with different tools, the covers tooled in gilt with a double fillet border, a single fillet outer panel with an acorn tool at the corners on vol.1 and a fleuron on vol. 2, and volutes at the centre of each sides, mitred to a triple fillet inner panel. The spines divided into six gilt panels with triple fillet compartments, lettered in the second panels, the others tooled with central ornaments and corner scrolls, the edges of the boards and turn-ins tooled with gilt rolls, marbled endleaves, gilt edges. (The spines slightly faded). A supplementary volume appeared many years later, in 1750. In vol. 2 pp.297-304 have been bound in twice. At first glance the bindings appear uniform, but the tools used on the two volume are all different. This may be explained by the year separating the publication dates. They are a distinguished pair of bindings - possibly designed for presentation. The first volume has a number of manuscript corrections. Bookplate of P.W. Donner, covering the bookplate of John Wallop who was in 1727 made Viscount Lymington and in 1743 became the first Earl of Portsmouth. From the library at Hurstbourne Park, Hampshire.
