Neuware - This volume contains the papers and discussions at IAU Colloquium No. 21 on Variable Stars in Globular Clusters and in Related Systems held in Toronto on the 29th, 30th and 31st August 1972. It was the intention of the organizers that this meeting should honour the life long work in this field of Professor Helen Sawyer Hogg. She has been continuously active in observational research on variables in globular clusters for 46 years and her catalogues and bibliographies as well as her research papers, review articles and IA U reports as chairman of the committee on variable stars in clusters are of fundamental importance to all workers in this field. The scope of the colloquium covered both observational and theoretical aspects of the problem, including the relationship of variables to non-variable cluster members, the position of the variables in the HR diagram and their importance for problems of stellar evolution, empirical data on the variables, periods and period changes, and the relevant parts of pulsation theory. The meeting was particularly successful in bringing together observers and theorists. It will have achieved its object if it has shown both observers and theorists which are the problems most suitable for attack at the present time. The meeting clearly demonstrated the great importance of research on variables in globular clusters and related systems for our understanding both of stellar evolution and stellar pulsation.…

I was then working in Nairobi and I knew nothing about the hormone apart from its role in lactation. Professor Mohammed Hyder of the Department of Zoology in the University of Nairobi was interested in the endocrine mechanisms which enable Tilapia fish to adapt to water with a very high electrolyte content. He invited me to a seminar given by Professor Howard Bern which was largely concerned with the role prolactin plays in fluid and electrolyte balance in sub-mammalian vertebrates. This inspired me to begin a programme of research into the roles prolactin plays in man and other animals. Very few physiologists or clinicians seem aware of the multifarious effects of prolactin in mammals. This book therefore aims to give a comprehensive account of the mammalian physiology of prolactin and to make suggestions about its possible role in diseases ranging from cancer to mental illness. The two subjects which have been previously widely covered, the roles of prolactin in lactation and in rat mammary cancer, are presented relatively briefly though with a full list of references. Mit dieser Vorlesung verfolgte ich das Ziel, den Studenten mittlerer Semester, die die Anfangervorlesungen gemeistert haben, eine Einfiihrung in die klassische Differentialgeometrie der Kurven und FIachen anzubieten und damit eine Alternative zu offerieren zu anderen Vorlesungen fiir mittlere Semester, wie etwa Funktionen theorie, Hohere Algebra oder Algebraische Topologie. Fiir den groBten Teil der Vorlesung wird nichts weiter als eine griindliche Kenntnis der Vorlesung iiber Analysis sowie die Kennt nis der reellen linearen Algebra und der euklidischen Geometrie vorausgesetzt. Nur in spiiteren Kapiteln, wo ich auch globale Fragen behandle, ist eine gewisse Vertrautheit mit der Topologie kompakter Fliichen von Nutzen; dabei wird aber nichts benutzt, was sich nicht in dem klassischen Topologie-Lehrbuch von Seifert und Threlfall findet. Fiir eine Obersicht iiber den Inhalt der Vorlesung verweise ich auf das Verzeichnis. Natiirlich muBte ich eine Auswahl treffen aus der Fiille des Materials, das fiir eine solche Vorlesung zur Verfiigung steht. Fiir mich ergab es sich ganz von seIber, daB da bei solche Gegenstiinde bevorzugt wurden, die der 2-dimensionalen riemannschen Geometrie zuzurechnen sind.
